Shifting, changing, becoming. Everything happens for a reason.
Bobby was a guitarist in a band he formed with his high school friends. He was heavily pregnant, but that did not stop him from performing on stage. For Bobby, the child he was carrying was a blessing in disguise, as he had been receiving more and more gigs to perform since the beginning of his pregnancy. His fans loved the fact that he was still performing while carrying a baby.
With Bobby in that condition, Jonah, his boyfriend, often found himself worrying. Jonah had met Bobby back when they were studying at the same institute, though in different programs. Jonah had not finished his degree yet, since he was two years younger than Bobby.
It wasn’t that Jonah did not care about Bobby’s condition. It was just that his boyfriend was hard to manage and stubbornly insisted on staying busy, even now that the pregnancy had reached the third trimester.
Tonight, Bobby had just finished performing at a music festival held by a local school. He was in high spirits, especially since the payment envelope was handed to him right after he and his bandmates stepped off the stage.
He wanted to share that happiness with Jonah.
“Let’s go grab something to eat while the cash just came in,” one of his friends said as they all sat inside the car.
“I’ll skip this one,” Bobby replied from the back seat, absently rubbing his swollen belly.
“Aw, that’s no fun, Bob. You’re gonna go all lovey-dovey instead, huh?” another friend teased. Bobby only let out a small laugh in response.
“Alright then, where should we drop you off? Might as well save you the ride cost.”
“Hold on, let me ask my boyfriend first.”
A sudden tightness spread across Bobby’s belly, but he ignored it, busy dialing Jonah’s number.
“Hello, babe,” Jonah answered, his voice low and slightly hoarse.
“Did you just wake up?” Bobby asked gently, making everyone else in the car exchange amused looks and stifle their laughter at how different the guitarist sounded when talking to his boyfriend. “Come keep me company while I eat, yeah? My treat this time. Same place as usual, near your apartment.”
Jonah, who had actually been woken up by Bobby’s call, took a moment to process everything he heard. “Yeah, sure. What time? I haven’t showered yet.”
Bobby broke into a wide smile without even realizing it. He couldn’t help it, everything about Jonah always made him happy. He rubbed his belly and replied, “Take it easy, babe. I’m not too far, maybe twenty minutes out, but go ahead and shower first.” He briefly grimaced, silent, as a dull ache twisted in his stomach.
“Okay. Just text me when you’re close, alright? I’m gonna hop in the shower.”
“Alright, babe. See you soon.”
“Bob, your stomach okay?” asked the friend sitting right beside him.
“Ah, I’m fine. Just a regular cramp. Haven’t gone to the bathroom yet,” Bobby answered, gently rubbing his swollen belly with a faint smile.
About half an hour later, Bobby was already at the restaurant where he had arranged to meet Jonah. The two of them spent their time chatting and enjoying dinner together. It was a Saturday night, so of course every public place was packed with people looking for a bit of fun after a long week. Bobby didn’t particularly like crowded places, but he didn’t mind as long as he could see Jonah as soon as possible.
“Hey,” Jonah called, spearing a piece of chicken with his fork. “When are you moving in with me? Your belly’s getting really big. I’m worried something might happen if you’re still living alone at your place.”
“Take it easy, babe. The baby’s still pretty comfortable in here,” Bobby said, glancing down as he gently rubbed his belly.
Jonah let out a quiet sigh. Bobby really was stubborn, he thought.
Bobby had already finished his meal, so now he just needed to wait for Jonah before they could move on to whatever else they had planned for their Saturday night. He pulled out his phone, scrolling through options for a cozy café where they could spend some time together, being affectionate in public, within reason. It hadn’t even been five minutes when the ache in his stomach returned. “Hey, I’m gonna hit the restroom for a bit,” he said. “Gotta go.”
Seeing how rushed Bobby was, Jonah didn’t get the chance to ask if he was okay. Instead, he picked up Bobby’s phone and continued searching for their next stop.
Inside the restroom, Bobby quickly pulled down his pants and sat on the toilet. It didn’t take long for him to relieve himself, considering the discomfort had been building since the drive over. He’d only been able to hold it in until he got to the restaurant.
But the problem was, the discomfort didn’t go away afterward. His stomach still felt tight and uneasy. Bobby braced himself against the wall and tried again, but nothing happened.
Back at the table, Jonah had already finished eating and was now waiting anxiously.
Bobby reached down with one hand, startled when he felt a bit of discharge. He quickly cleaned himself up and washed his hands. After pulling his pants back on, he left the restroom and hurried back to Jonah.
“Hey, that took forever,” Jonah said.
“Yeah—” Bobby replied, then leaned down to whisper in Jonah’s ear, “Sorry, babe… can we just go to your place instead?”
Jonah turned to him, his face slightly flushed. Bobby usually stopped by his place when they wanted to hook up, but judging from how he was acting now, Jonah knew something was off. “Does your stomach still hurt?”
Bobby gave a small nod. “Still cramping,” he said, one hand holding the lower part of his belly.
“Don’t tell me you’re—”
Bobby nodded again, confirming Jonah’s suspicion. “Don’t panic, okay? I just want to be at your place. Just the two of us.” He waited for Jonah to get ready while picking up his tote bag. Once Jonah was set, they left the restaurant after paying their bill.
Jonah was worried. The two of them walked toward his apartment, only about five minutes away from the restaurant. He carried Bobby’s tote bag while keeping an arm around him, pulling him close as Bobby looked increasingly uneasy. “Hang in there, okay?” His lips pressed into a thin line, nerves and fear creeping in. He let go of Bobby’s waist and instead took his hand, guiding him toward the elevator.
The elevator was crowded. Bobby couldn’t move much, his body already feeling hot and deeply uncomfortable.
“Just a little longer. I love you,” Jonah whispered.
Bobby nodded faintly, then lowered his head as another contraction hit. His brows furrowed as he fought to keep quiet inside the cramped space. “Fuhh.” He exhaled, tightening his grip on Jonah’s hand without realizing it, which immediately made Jonah turn toward him.
“Hey? Is it cramping again?” Jonah asked, just as the elevator chimed, signaling they had reached the floor where his apartment unit was.
· · ·
Now it was just the two of them in the main area of Jonah’s studio apartment. As the cramps from the contractions came more frequently, Bobby finally gave up trying to stay strong in front of him. “Babe… it hurts,” he whimpered, clinging to Jonah as they faced each other. He rested his chin on the younger man’s shoulder, arms wrapped around his waist. The contractions were intense, but there was no way he was going to a hospital or calling a midwife. He had already made up his mind about having a home birth, and nothing was going to change that.
“I know,” Jonah murmured. “Are you sure you don’t want to go to the hospital instead?” he asked, just to make sure, especially seeing how much pain Bobby was in.
It was worth trying, even if Jonah already knew Bobby’s answer wouldn’t change that easily.
Under the strain of the contractions, Bobby became more sensitive than usual. He clutched at Jonah’s shirt, holding him tighter. “I’m being a burden, aren’t I?”
Jonah hesitated for a moment. He knew that a misunderstanding right now would only make things worse. He gently rubbed Bobby’s back, hoping to ease him at least a little. “No, it’s not like that. I’m just scared… scared something might happen to you,” he explained. He pressed a soft kiss to Bobby’s temple and let his hand rest against one side of his belly. Jonah couldn’t help feeling anxious. He had agreed to Bobby’s wish for a home birth, but he had no experience at all in helping someone give birth.
Bobby’s stomach tightened again.
“MMMHHHH,” he groaned in pain, breathing out roughly.
“Another cramp? What do you need? Do you feel like pushing yet?” Jonah fired off questions, ready to do anything Bobby might need right now.
There was a brief pause before the contraction eased enough for Bobby to answer, “Not yet… just cramps.” He was starting to feel uncomfortable, his clothes damp with sweat. He loosened his hold on Jonah and leaned back slightly, taking a deep breath as both hands moved to support his lower back.
Jonah swallowed hard at the sight. Bobby’s eyes were shut tight, his sharp features tense. The contrast between his large belly and his lean, toned frame, along with the fact that he was carrying their baby and would be giving birth soon, reminded Jonah exactly why he had fallen for him and stayed, even after more than two years together.
“Do you want me to help you take your clothes off first?” Jonah offered, noticing how much Bobby was sweating even with the air conditioning on.
“Yeah. It’s really hot.”
Jonah smiled. Bobby rarely let anyone help him with anything, so he took this chance seriously, wanting to show that he’d always be there for him. He began removing Bobby’s clothes, one by one, until his boyfriend was completely bare.
“Why are you hard?”
Bobby’s face flushed, whether from embarrassment at Jonah’s question or from the contractions… or both. He shifted awkwardly, a little annoyed when Jonah let out a soft chuckle. “Babe,” he called, clearly about to ask for something, “can you get something ready for me to give birth on? Towels or anything—just bring them here.”
“Why not just use the bed?”
Bobby looked at Jonah, who now seemed both confused and serious at the same time, then glanced toward the bed and shook his head. “It’ll be easier to clean the floor than your bed later,” he answered.
“But the bed would be more comfortable.”
“I don’t want that, Jonah.”
“Babe, just this once, please listen to me! I just don’t want anything to happen to you. Cleaning the bed is easy, okay? I want to give you the best.” Jonah’s eyes grew watery. He didn’t even know how to deal with Bobby’s stubbornness anymore. He quickly wiped his tears with the back of his hand before they could fall, then added in a quieter voice, “I love you.”
“Hey.” Bobby reached for Jonah’s upper arm, but his boyfriend brushed him off.
Jonah turned away, using the collar of his shirt to wipe the tears that had already slipped down his cheeks.
“I’ll stay here, okay? I promise I’ll be fine.” Bobby gently patted Jonah’s shoulder with one hand while the other kept rubbing his swollen belly. Deep down, he felt grateful to have Jonah.
At the touch, Jonah turned back to face him. “I’m scared.”
Bobby gave a faint smile and pulled Jonah into a hug. “Shh… I’m right here, babe. I’m okay.” He pressed a soft kiss to Jonah’s cheek. Right at that moment, another contraction hit. Resting his chin on Jonah’s shoulder, he whispered, “Rub my stomach, Jonah. It really hurts.”
“Okay, I’ve got you.” Jonah began stroking Bobby’s belly, then dropped to his knees in front of him and pressed a kiss there. “Hey, little one… don’t hurt your dad, okay?” He kissed Bobby’s belly repeatedly, not stopping his gentle touch.
Bobby’s [genitals] hardened from Jonah’s kisses and soft touches on his stomach. After Jonah prepared something underneath him, Bobby let out a quiet moan, gripping his boyfriend’s shoulders as another contraction came.
Noticing Bobby’s reaction, Jonah leaned in and pressed a kiss to the tip of his [genitals], his tongue brushing over it. His hand moved slowly along the length, while his tongue worked skillfully over the sensitive head, now flushed, his eyes closing as he began to take him in from the tip.
“Ahh—why are you suddenly sucking my [genitals], Jonah?”
Instead of answering, Jonah only grew bolder, continuing what he was doing, focusing on Bobby’s sensitive spots. He figured it might help distract Bobby, even just a little, from the pain and discomfort. Bobby’s [genitals] slid deeper into his mouth, becoming the main focus of the attention he gave with his tongue. Jonah sucked firmly, tracing along every vein with the tip of his tongue and the press of his lips.
“Babe, that’s enough. My stomach hurts,” Bobby complained. His stomach felt all over the place, his heart pounding as he braced himself for whatever might come next. The contractions grew stronger, making him reflexively clutch Jonah’s hair just as Jonah pulled his [genitals] out of his mouth. Bobby couldn’t see Jonah’s face, blocked by the curve of his own belly. “AH—AHH—MMNHH—” he gasped. At that moment, a cloudy fluid suddenly burst from his [rear].
Jonah, still kneeling below him, was startled when Bobby’s water broke. “Hey,” he called out, worry clear in his voice, before quickly helping Bobby down onto his knees.
Slowly, Bobby shifted into a kneeling position, gripping Jonah’s upper arms to steady himself while also trying to cope with the pain of the contractions.
“Just stay calm, okay? I’m right here,” Jonah said, trying to reassure Bobby, and himself. If anything, he felt even more overwhelmed with fear and anxiety facing the birth of their child. He took a deep breath, placing his hands on either side of Bobby’s firm, tightening belly. “Try to push slowly, okay? And control your breathing.” Bobby’s grip on his arms was incredibly strong. Jonah was just grateful Bobby didn’t have long, sharp nails, because even this would probably leave marks. He wrapped his arms around Bobby’s waist, holding him close as his body tensed with each push.
“ENNGHHHH!” Bobby threw his head back, feeling the pressure build along his [intimate area].
“Good job, babe. Take a breath first, then push again.”
Bobby held Jonah’s gaze for a moment. His face was flushed, strained from the pain and the effort of controlling his breathing. He lowered his head, looking at his belly, which had dropped as the baby moved further down the birth canal. His knees instinctively spread wider, his arms now draped around Jonah’s neck. “FUHH—HAAHHH—” Bobby rested his forehead against Jonah’s shoulder, trying to steady himself through the waves of contractions that kept coming.
Jonah rubbed Bobby’s back, gently massaging his lower side. “Do you want to change positions? Or move somewhere else? Maybe it’ll be more comfortable,” he offered, but Bobby immediately shook his head.
“HUHH—HUUHH—HNNGGHHHH!” Bobby pushed with all his strength, gripping Jonah’s arms tightly as another contraction hit. He could feel the baby slowly moving toward his [intimate area]. One of his hands moved down, trembling as he reached to feel himself, slick and wet. “AAARGHHHH—FUCK—” he cursed as the baby’s head began pressing right at the opening.
“Hang in there. The baby’s almost here. Stay strong, okay?” Jonah was ready to hear Bobby curse again, or even snap at him. Still, he kept rubbing and massaging his boyfriend’s back gently.
But instead, Bobby only groaned through the pain as he pushed, “MMMNHH—HMMHHH—ENNNGHHH!”
The baby’s head began to stretch him from the inside, forcing the opening wider little by little. The burning sensation was intense as it pressed and strained against him.
“Babe, check on the baby,” Bobby said. He let Jonah pull away to see how things were progressing. Bobby focused on his breathing, placing his hands on his hips. He took a deep breath, then groaned and pushed again with all his strength. “HNNNGHHHH! It burns so much—” He reached down again, this time trying to feel for the baby’s head.
Jonah bent down to check how far along the baby was. “Half the head’s already out. Take a breath first, push slowly.” He pulled his phone from his pocket, wanting to capture this precious moment. One hand held the phone, the camera now aimed toward Bobby’s [intimate area], while the other continued to rub the pregnant man’s belly. “I love you.”
Hearing that half of the baby’s head was already out made Bobby feel a little calmer. He focused all his strength and attention on delivering the baby, though he couldn’t help the small smile that formed at Jonah’s sudden words.
“Push, babe.”
“MMMNHHHH—HNNNGGHHH!” Bobby held onto his belly, taking a deep breath as he gathered strength to push again. “ENNGHHHH—HUH—HUHH—MMMNGGHHHHH!”
“Just a little more, the head’s almost out!”
Bobby lifted his head, bracing himself against the overwhelming pain in his [intimate area]. “AAAARGHHHH!” He turned slightly, looking at Jonah, who he knew was even more worried about him and the baby. “Jonah,” he called, “look at me.”
Jonah met his gaze, taking a steady breath. There was something about Bobby that made him feel calmer, even now.
“Trust me, okay?” Bobby gave a faint smile, pushing between his words, “MMMNHHH—I love you more, Jonah.”
Jonah nodded softly. “I love you the most.” He pressed a quick kiss to Bobby’s lips, then held his hand tightly. “I trust you. I know you can do this. Come on, control your breathing and push again, babe.”
Bobby lowered his head. He squeezed Jonah’s hand hard, then pushed with whatever strength he had left. “ENNNGGHHHHHH—HUF—HUFF—SSSHH—AAAANGGHHH!”
The baby’s head finally slipped all the way out, followed by a gush of fluid and a bit of blood. Jonah smiled, his eyes glossy with tears, while Bobby let out a relieved breath. Neither of them said anything, but their happiness was shared in that quiet moment.
“Just a little more.”
“Yeah… okay.”
Jonah quickly grabbed another folded towel and placed it beneath Bobby’s [intimate area]. He made sure his camera was positioned properly to capture this once-in-a-lifetime moment.
“Jonah, it hurts—” Bobby said before pushing again, “AAANGHHH—MMMNNHHH!” His heels lifted slightly off the ground as he strained. His [intimate area] stretched to accommodate the baby’s shoulders. “EEENGGHHHHH!” With one final push, the baby slipped free, landing onto the thick towel Jonah had prepared.
Bobby let out a soft laugh, relief washing over him as their baby was finally born safely. He immediately reached down, lifting the crying newborn into his arms and holding them against his chest. “Hey, don’t cry. Daddy’s here. Papa’s here too.” He turned his head slightly, then stifled a laugh when he saw Jonah’s eyes brimming with tears again. “Look at Papa, huh? Crying too… trying to compete with you, I think.”
