So, working on Book 6 right now. I'm 5 chapters in, roughly 15k words already. The book was flowing well for the basic introductions / etc and then I got into the meat of the story and hit a roadblock. Now I'm back to world-building on the backend so that the plot for book 6 makes sense. This is one time pantsing is a bad idea.

The good news is that once I get this down (basically, breaking down the politics for the GC in detail), it'll mean that books 7 - 9 will be a lot easier.

Oh, did I mention that I think we're now looking at 4 arcs instead of 3? I have a feeling that it's going to have to work that way rather than my initial 3 arc series. But we'll see.

Anyway, naming help. One major faction is made up of the Combat Classers. I'm trying to figure out a cool, imposing and slightly pompous name for this group but my brain is dead. So... anyone want to give it a go

My wife suggested the “brotherhood of red dawn” red like blood

The Luminous Order of Defenders, or maybe the Legitimately Awesome Warriors that go around calling themselves the LAW making Judge Dread references.

Robert Rosenthal

war breakers, slaughter squad, solders of America, heros alliance

Well depends very much on what kind of major Fraction they are. If they are a Fraction in the Galactic Council , Then the Grand Galactic Combat Command. or something along those Lines. If it's a fraction on earth or in the cities controlled by the humans, Grand Teran Combat Alliance would likely be best if the acronym forms a word on it's own. Human Alliance of Rapid Defense HARD

"The Fist", That's it, simple, to the point, imposing and slightly pompous or so it feels to me. If its too simple maybe you can go "Terran Fist" or even "Fist of Terra" (assuming this is an human faction), as in the fist of mother earth kind of thing, that def has some pomp to it!

Alpha Company?... I swear I have no ulterior motives….. Okay fine I'll be serious Death Walkers, Death Bringers, etc

Gio Dude

Like LAW or HARD above, start with the acronym and work backwards, like SODS, which could be something like Sons of Death's Sword, and then you can make puns off of it: "Those poor SODS, getting destroyed again". If it's an alien faction, you can have even more fun with it, thanks to "weirdness of translation" issues, like "Destroying Enemies Valiantly, Intently And Never Tiredly". Dratted DEVIANTs. Hope that helps!

Sadly, considering everything's translated, abbreviations won't make sense. Or shouldn't.

Tao Wong

OOoh... so tempted to call them Slaughter. Just that, but eh.

Tao Wong

Hmmm... I like where this idea is going. I'm looking for a simple, short name, so something like that makes some sense. I'll have to play with the idea but this is the closest to a winner.

Tao Wong

Yeah, acronyms are weird and why I want to stay away from them since once you translate an acronym it makes no sense. Or shouldn't at least. Unless you're a very good translator.

Tao Wong

Har. You crack me up. But no.

Patrick Morales

I am disappointed that my idea wouldn't work. But I am ecstatic that you care so much for your readers who read in another language that you are hesitant to use simple word gags that won't translate.

Gio Dude

Ah, but that's the point! I figure it's right up Ali's alley to translate the proper name into an english name with an acronym that's ridiculous, and blame it on "the weirdness of translation", and not him messing with John. I can see Ali literally cackling as some poor alien asks why john's talking about "People who do things differently from the accepted norms", John getting pissed off because he's used to making long names into acronyms, glaring at Ali, and then having to list off the full name, ridiculous and pompous as it is. Chalking this one up to caffeine deprived delusions on my part.

if I can make someone laugh then I have done my job

Awesome! I tend to enjoy short names also, they seem to have denser feel to me, if that makes any sense. I think the fist has a nice amount of flexibility as you can easily find ways to make fun of it for characters who want to, since there are all sorts of ways to play with the word fist in snarky ways. Also it feels, to me at least, that it could fit well for either a group of powerful fighter classers with an over inflated sense of self importance doing mostly good to an organization that started out reasonable and moved to the tyrant side of the tracks, like a paladin order gone meanie type of thing. Glad you liked it dude, your books are the awesomeness btw, they give my life extra happiness! Like, probably at least plus 14 or so. That's a lot btw, at least it is on my character sheet.
