I know I'm incredibly late to this discussion but something I noticed that wasn't brought up. Kevin's complaint seems to be that Rowena loses far too often and plays too much to certain tropes. Is the solution to the issue to simply flip the script and have Rowena be a constant winning badass who's unbeatable? Because that plays to just as many tropes on the opposite end of the spectrum. Having Rowena actually experience both winning and losing makes her character far more interesting and believable. If she comes up against opponents like this demon lord who are clearly above her weight class, is she just going to pull some random thing out of her gorgeous butt to win?

Sure it'd be boring if she won all the time; I think the primary objection was centered around the "Damsel in Distress/Non-Con" thing, which was fairly delightfully handled in the strips following this- kind of an "I actually want it" kind of thing.

Non-Con in the Rowenaverse is an interesting thing. The women usually seem either into it (like Rowena is here; flushing with the idea of being penetrated), or treating it like a casual annoyance of their world. Like "UGH- giant stone-monster cock? AGAIN? This is so annoying!"

She looks more defiant at first, but her "turned down" expression in the penultimate panel makes her look beaten. But... look at those flimsy lil' ropes. Girl could TOTALLY escape if she wanted to. After reviewing a lot of rowena content it seems she loses fights or gets surrounded/captured and fucked a lot. genuinely curious as to why present her as a awesome barbarian lady if she's just going to fill the trope and lose or give in to people or foes around (roughly from what i've read and seen) 80% of the time. If its for smut purposes outside of any story or character reason thats fine but im curious?

As a co-writer to this comic (With Kumi of course being primary writer/final say) I can say that there's a lot more in the works that have our girls victorious. I think maybe there could have been more elaboration on just how significantly stronger Xanon is compared to the normal demon. Dont regard the one shot pictures as "canon". There's a lot more coming up thats not just a non-con train. And here we thought we were teasing people with Rowena defeating the tentacle monster on page one :P

Hey Kevin! A lot has changed about how I'm approaching Rowena as a character since starting a comic about her and really only months ago decided I wanted to make things more victorious for her and her friends when they get into fights. For many years she was mostly just a hot, red haired, barbarian babe often ending up in compromising positions who was fun to draw. Of course, all this change of thought came to me after chapter 1 was already several pages in and it's a bit hard to just change everything so drastically in the middle of the chapter so I'll just be wrapping this one up with the gist of what I wrote for it and move on with the story. I don't plan on having anymore fight scenes go down like this as I no longer want Rowena to be seen in such a way either (always the 'loser'). I would not consider any of the previous illustrations of her to be canon to the her actual story as those are a mash up of commissions and well, yes, purely for smut purposes. But yeah, had this character for awhile and her purpose and meaningfulness to me has changed a lot over time as her popularity grew! I'm glad people really seem interested in her and want to see her in more victorious positions and my intent for the remainder of the story is to head in that direction. :) I consider the fact that she's causing so many strong feelings in some of you a good thing! I will aim to represent her as the bad ass she actually is later on. Also, patience. You guys don't know exactly how things are gonna go down in the next several pages (okay, okay, you know what's gonna happen for a little bit, but shhh). ;-)

Well I appreciate the response. Rowena is a great character and like you said it’s my fondness for her character that wants her to do better in the story. I suppose the reason it’s causing a bit heavier feelings than normal is because this was my first introduction to Rowena and on top of her character was awesome art and a lot of potential for adventure. I suppose I was invested in watching the fem barbarian complete her first adventure successfully and look freaking kickass doing it

Yeah, I hear you. It's WAY different from just "LOL Rowena getting raped because she got captured!" pin-ups, because it's an actual comic and we really see the characters as people instead of just images.

Huh, I keep getting the comments and replies as if they were all sent to me. I wasn't one of the ones vocally against this circumstance, but yeah, the thing is this: Rowena getting raped has been a very "pin-up" kind of thing until this point, and usually treated as a funny joke. To that extent, I didn't have much of an issue with it. Lots of HF stuff has that kind of smut in it, and I didn't find pin-ups so bad. But STORIES featuring it? That's a whole different ball of wax. It makes it seem so much more horrific and awful because we actually know the characters this time, and see them as people. So suddenly the "LOL Rowena is drunk and got gangraped by Goblins!" thing now looks vicious and awful because she's a real character this time. It's a lot less funny and more upsetting. Perhaps part of it's because the comic hasn't really had much COMEDY in it until this point. If it was just "the adventures of the dopes who keep getting tentacled!" perhaps it wouldn't come off badly- stuff like Lady Bothria having her way with Rowena and that other large-breasted woman is an example of something that felt more tongue-in-cheek. But since this comic is more dramatic, it comes off much, much worse that the characters are being victimized and raped. Rowena's defiance improves it a bit, as it avoids the "psychotically angry/crying victim" thing, but still.

Yep you hit the nail on her head there. Porn is porn but once you start to expand on a character, their personality and start to humanize them, they become real in a sense

@Keven I think the answer is "Nothing up until now is canon" simply because we dont want to be beholden to any prior picture. The possibility of "BUT THIS PICTURE SHOWS THAT..." Is incredibly frustrating :P. That said! The recent Lona Choose your own adventure is the closest thing to "side canon", but even thats dubious because I think we both agree that Lona wouldn't go risk her life for a book of barbarian seduction. @Beef Funny you should mention the comics, because I was the one who commissioned those... But no, that has been scrapped from the continuity completely for all the reasons Kumi said in her post above. I really enjoyed them, but Rowena's slowly turning into our amazing hero and I think we're very on point with our turn-around in theme after this issue. I have to say, the idea of writing some true action scenes with some real asskicking on our heroes part has me really really excited. BUT, without peril there can be no heroism. And without the risk of defeat there can be no glory. I'd just never expect something as heavy as the scene being played out now to show up again. Shenanigans though? Maybe...

None of the smut is really canon in my mind, although I may re hash old ideas (like the Orc King) but make them better and less one off smutty. @Kevin - also, now that you've informed me this is your first introduction to Rowena your reaction makes a lot more sense haha. I assumed most fans had already seen her collection of past images and knew what they were getting into. XD

Yeah, that would make it quite the shock. I mean, I came into this expecting Rowena to get regularly trounced and take some involuntary boners as a result- as the comic has been 100% NOT that thus far, it probably comes as a shock to a newbie. The fact that it IS a comic makes it come off a bit differently, though- once I saw it in full art here, I was like "wow... this seems harsher than it does in the pin-ups, somehow...". My comments were me rationalizing just WHY that is, and why others might feel that way.
