Hey guys,

I've seen a few artists adding some discord servers as part of their Patreon. Is that something you guys would like?

I'm not entirely sure what people use them for as far as art goes, but it can be a place for fans to hang out and talk about things and ask me questions if you have some. Might be able to post some things I'm working on or what not.

Just curious about it is all and I want to make your patronage more entertaining if I can, especially if it's just something simple like this. :)

Thoughts?

Yeah, if it’s something you’d be interested in it’s be fun to hang out!

Not a big fan of the rise of Discord servers really, just adds another channel to keep track of if it's used for art stuffs. For hanging out it's quite nice though (But yeah, for WiPs it kind of beats the point of Patreon tiers a little bit)

It may miss the point of Patreon with one more place to keep track off and one more place to keep the nuisance posters out of.

I haven't used it yet. It just seems like another comment section to look at. If I have questions/comments about posts on your Patreon or Tumblr, I just make comments/notes/messages directly. If you are streaming something, there is chat. I am not sure how Discord would be useful.

I'm not quite sure how it all works. Anyone care to enlighten me?

It can be pretty cool, but it can be a double edged sword. I'd suggest making an account and having a look into some other artists server's first (like NK's?) and seeing if that's something you want to get involved with.

In my very limited experience, discord is only useful if you want a community to interact. Specifically, if you'd like to chat with your patrons while you work, but most of all for them to talk amongst themselves, presumably about the content you create. You certainly shouldn't feel like it's your burden to entertain 150 people all the time, I'm sure you've got enough on your hands as it is as far as screaming mouths to feed are concerned ;) It should also be said that discord is a much smoother experience than the clunky patreon website. It's something in between instant messaging and a forum. You could use it to have people chat while you're livestreaming, if your client doesn't have a chat box; or let people post and link fan art / fiction; or roleplay within your characters' universe. I must admit I'm not entirely convinced it's a worthwhile investment for your kind of patreon, but this is all I could think of. I have used it in the past and you can see all channels you have access to in a convenient interface, so I'm sure I'd pop in occasionally :)

Thank you guys for your feedback! I’ve been thinking it wasn’t worthwhile for me specifically but wanted to know what other people used it for. I think for now I will just keep things to livestreams and Patreon since you guys can chat with me while I work on there and that really seems to be the biggest reason for a discord channel from what you guys have said. So yes no need to add another thing! 🙂

I prefer using Discords since I'm usually at work. So I can't enjoy livestreams like the rest of the patrons.

ScuzzBucket

Wait, you do livestreams? I've never seen that! How do I find out when those are?

Lynn

She's on Picarto, I think you can subscribe to her channel on there and get e-mail notifications!

Joshua Wolfe

Yeah, she posts on her Tumblr to let folks know when she will be streaming. Usually, it's in the evening (Central Time).
