Hey guys!

Soo, we're slowly starting to pick away again at that little ambitious game project we teased awhile back. We keep going back and forth on how to place the characters on the battlefield which will end up effecting some types of game elements we could put into this game (such as moving your character around strategically and if character placement matters a lot or not).

Which battlefield layout do you like more?

A) Straight across line up.

B) Spread out.

Feel free to share your thoughts on why you prefer the one that you do!

I've actually played a few games that have the Straight across approach. Darkest Dungeon, and vambrace cold soul. They were okay, but I love the spread out design. It feels more immersive.

Better depth and who I feel would do a better job in the line up for attack.

It could be the details in the pictures, but spread out feels more dynamic to me.

Spread gives a sense of depth and clearly delineates your front line and back row heroes. You could do something like Soul Nomad where there are slight stat bonuses/penalties based on position and character abilities can target different positions. For example, back row may get a defense boost but melee attack penalty. More powerful abilities target bigger groups. So, a basic attack could hit one enemy, a powerful melee attack could target one row, and a strong spell could hit all enemies.

I like the simplicity of the straight across.

Spread out is better for front rank/back rank melee/ranged divide. Lined up works fine for a dungeon crawler in tight corridors, but unless you care about sword/spear/pike formations or rearguard/multifront battles, I don't think it really offers much gameplay-wise. And unrelated, but Lona looks *so* tiny next to everyone else. The price of not being a barbarian.

Thank you guys for the feedback!! I think you all are right in that the spread out look fits more with the type of game we’re making. 😁
