Decided to make this in color after all as I just wasn't satisfied with the black and white versions.

Ooh, me like! I do find it interesting that your style looks better in both "roughs" and colors than in just inks... I think it's mainly because your style is so clean, crisp and non-shaded that the inks just look very spartan by comparison. That said, your B&W shading style was TOTALLY working for me. What didn't you like about it?

I do agree with that. It just didn't pop enough for me when I looked back on them and I found it more frustrating to be limited to a few gray shades to differentiate between characters and scenery. Even though it was certainly faster to just do grey shadows on some of the pages, it didn't feel like it took THAT much longer (maybe an extra hour) to color it this way and my satisfaction was much higher. So, I went with it!
