"The Last of Us" Season 1 Episode 1 When You're Lost in the Darkness

The episode opens in 1968 with a chilling discussion on a talk show, where a scientist warns about the potential threat of fungi evolving to infect humans. This eerie prelude sets the tone for the catastrophic events to follow. Flash forward to 2003, where we meet Joel Miller (#PedroPascal), a construction worker living in Austin, Texas, with his teenage daughter, Sarah (#NicoParker). On what seems like a normal day, subtle signs of chaos begin to surface—a disturbing radio broadcast, strange behavior from a neighbor, and an unusual military presence. That night, the outbreak of the deadly Cordyceps infection erupts, turning people into violent, fungus-controlled creatures. Joel, his brother Tommy (Gabriel Luna), and Sarah attempt to flee, but in the chaos, a soldier is ordered to shoot them. Sarah is fatally wounded and dies in Joel's arms, marking the devastating start of the apocalypse. The story then jumps 20 years ahead to 2023. The world has collapsed, with humanity living in heavily controlled quarantine zones (QZs), run by the authoritarian military group, FEDRA. Joel is now a hardened smuggler in Boston, working with his partner, Tess (Anna Torv). They’re on a mission to retrieve stolen car batteries to escape the QZ and find Joel’s missing brother. However, their plans are disrupted when they cross paths with the Fireflies, a rebel group fighting against FEDRA. The Fireflies, led by Marlene (Merle Dandridge), ask Joel and Tess to smuggle a 14-year-old girl, Ellie (#BellaRamsey), out of the city. While initially reluctant, Joel and Tess agree after realizing Marlene is injured and unable to transport Ellie herself. As they sneak out of the quarantine zone at night, they are caught by a FEDRA soldier. When he scans Ellie for infection, she stabs him before Joel brutally kills him in a moment reminiscent of Sarah’s death. In the aftermath, Tess and Joel discover Ellie is infected—but instead of turning into one of the infected, she claims to be immune, revealing that she might be the key to a cure.
