Good news! I finally managed to get my hands on a player’s save file with the black screen issue (thanks, Chris!), and because of that, I was able to track down exactly where the code was breaking in older saves!

Before this fix, I only had my own saves to test with, and since I never had the black screen issue myself, I tried a bunch of simulations to reproduce and fix it. Turns out the efficiency wasn’t great, but now, with a real player save, I could dig deep and find the root cause of the problem. And it’s fixed!

Sorry for the inconvenience, everyone. I’ll be more careful when making code changes from now on, even if they’re meant to improve things, so they don’t break old saves again.
