Being out to sea without an engine for negotiating the marina had led to Kirina being rescued by Savannah’s Charm and her crew. Being rescued had led to conversations, new budding friendships, and a somewhat terrifying invitation to do some modeling.

The owner of Savannah’s Charm was in the process of launching a new garment line for functional, fashionable, and fit-conscious swimwear designed with water sports in mind. Kirina had been asked to model for them.

As a former K-pop artist, being in front of crowds and cameras had once been the norm. But back then she had been dancing—hitting all the moves at the right time, in perfect sync with the rest of her group. Somehow, she viewed that differently from being alone in the viewfinder. Just her, a swimsuit, and the expectation to look comfortable.

Kirina decided to try and become more comfortable. She called Sasha Baek-Everett and asked if maybe the photographers—or at least one of them—could meet her to do some practice shots.

Geoni Naalk-Ryan immediately called back. “When can we meet!”

She arrived earlier that morning, driving up from South Padre Island. “Let’s just have some fun. Take a lot of pictures, and get used to working together.”

And so it began. Awkwardness gave way to laughter and a lot of smiles. Little by little, Geoni encouraged Kirina to try new poses. Little by little, Kirina felt more confident.

She relaxed into the moment, the warmth of the sun, and the idea of being seen again. She would not be selling the K-pop ideals; rather swimwear, but there was something familiar about the feeling.
