MAYBE LATER by Jasmine Banks
It’s Saturday morning and me and Micah both just got paid. We sat down last night and paid the bills, set aside a little for groceries, gas, and bus fare, and then looked at what was left.
“I’m working 45 next two weeks,” Micah said. “I think we can get the paint for the bedroom. It’ll be fine.”
So, morning has come and we’re getting dressed to go to Home Depot. Honestly, I’m a little excited to get started on another home improvement project.
As we were finishing up, Micah asked about my call to SwimFit Apparel. “Did you get through?”
His question reminded me of my awkward phone call from the day before. “I did…”
“And?”
“I’m not sure…” I shrugged and looked away. “I got through to Sasha Everett. I said I was… you know… something like, “My name is Jasmine and I’ve been reading about your company. I was wondering if I could get involved in some way.”
“And what did she say?”
“She asked what I meant about being involved. I started sort of tripping over my words. Like, I could model or just help with office work. I don’t exactly remember.”
“And then what did she say?”
“It was noisy, but I think she said something about the new company taking a lot of her time and feeling like she was getting behind in her other responsibilities. Then she said she was at the airport and had to give TSA her phone. I said I’d call back.”
Micah smiled. “So that sounds good, right?”
“I don’t know… I guess…”
“So you call back when she’s not busy, right?”
“Yeah, I guess…”
That was about all on that topic. After that, we locked in on the project for the day.
But Micah always makes me feel like things are okay. I really like how he encourages me to go for things. He’s positive and supportive, but he listens first. He believes in me, and that’s something I don’t think I felt for most of my life.
So, I guess that’s the plan. Sort of. I’ll give her a few days and then call again.
I’ll try to not trip over my words so much next time.

WISH I WERE IN COLORADO by Kirina Yung
I stopped at the store this afternoon for oat milk, candles, and a few snacks for the gallery. Saturdays in Port Aransas move slow—locals chatting in the aisles, the air faintly salty even here inside. I like it that way. It’s the kind of quiet that doesn’t need to be filled.
While on the chip aisle, I opened Instagram and saw posts from @ailana.geven and @agi_thechosen. They’re in Colorado this week—working with the Colorado Forest Restoration Institute to replant native trees and help the young forest take root. I read that line twice: to help the young forest take root. It stayed with me.
Maybe it’s because I know that feeling—trying to root somewhere new after being uprooted too many times. The work they’re doing looks beautiful: mountain light, soil on their hands, laughter between tasks. It reminded me how much I miss that kind of shared purpose.
A few years ago, everything in my life was noise and timing and lights that never dimmed. Every performance had to be perfect. Now my world is smaller—morning walks by the marina, coffee at the gallery, afternoons editing soft sounds of waves and gulls into music no one’s waiting for but me. I love it, and yet… sometimes I miss the together part.
There’s a kind of energy in teamwork—like harmony, even when the notes don’t match perfectly. The other day, I watched Ailana, Sasha, and Geoni in one of their volunteer posts and caught myself smiling. It looked so natural, the way they work side by side. Maybe that’s something I need to grow toward again—community, collaboration, not just quiet creation.
For now, I’ll bring my groceries home, light one of those new candles, and imagine the scent of pine instead of salt. I know when things with SwimFit start moving again, I’ll be part of modeling for them—but until then… maybe I should find ways to better connect with Ailana and the others down in South Padre.
I think I’d like to feel that sense of belonging that comes from being around good people and doing good things.
