QUEEN OF THE RAIL YARDS, Chapter 7 (Patreon)
Content
A Dreams Chronicle
They didn’t find the artifact in the rail yard.
What they found instead were stories.
Whispers woven into rivets. Symbols burned into rail ties. Names scrawled in chalk and etched beneath switchboxes—forgotten names, discarded ones. The names of those who remembered.
Ailana stood at the center of what had once been Bellows Bend Station. Half-buried beneath slag and ash, the platform was now a refuge for the displaced: scavengers, outcasts, broken droids, and freethinkers who had slipped through the cracks of Empire. These weren’t rebels, not yet. But they had seen the glyphs. They had felt the shift in the tracks.
And they knew the Comet had returned.
They called her "Queen Rail" in hushed voices—not the way the machines in the city had meant it, but as a kind of promise. A whisper of what might come next.
Ailana didn’t yet know if she could live up to it.
By morning, the settlement had grown. A radio technician from the copper mines had rerouted a receiver to track rogue steam signals—frequencies that didn’t belong. A woman with soot-scarred hands claimed she had once seen the Queen as a girl, during a jump. “You looked younger then,” she said, “but the eyes—same fire.”
There were more: a conductor turned codebreaker, a medic who swore he had patched up versions of her before, in timelines that folded like paper. They came with bits of data, torn manifestos, fragments of something called the Temporal Accordance—the faction hunting her across time. Some remembered being part of it once. Others had resisted it for lifetimes.
What brought them all here was not certainty. It was memory.
Something about the Memory Engine had cracked open more than her own mind. It had created ripples. Some subtle, others vast.

By twilight, a map of the timeline fractures had been scrawled across a rusted cargo hull. Nodes flickered in flickering blue phosphor, each a place where memory bled into reality: the Paris convergence, the furnace mutiny, the Empire of Rust.
Ailana traced a path between them with her glove. “If we move along this arc,” she said, “we can reach the Prism Bridge. If it's still there, it might give us a way to jump clean.”
“To where?” asked the fireman from the Comet, who had since declared loyalty—not to her name, but to the cause.
“To before all of it,” she said. “To the first breach. Before I became the Queen. Before I became… whatever I was.”
He hesitated. “Won’t that undo all this?”
Ailana looked around. To the makeshift radio mast. The children learning to solder by lantern light. The man whittling a gear-shaped locket from an old drive wheel. All of it, fragile and real.
“I don’t want to undo it,” she said softly. “I want to give it a chance to begin.”
From the shadows, a new voice spoke. Low. Tense.
“I’m not sure that’s your choice to make anymore.”
She turned—and stared.
It was her own face.
Younger.
Wearing the same flight jacket, but with less dust. Less sorrow. More fire.
Ailana felt the chill that always came before a timefold.
The girl stepped forward. “I didn’t stay behind in Paris. I jumped. Just not to where you thought.”
For a long breath, no one spoke.
Then Ailana offered the blue vial between them.
“Then I guess it’s time we decide together,” she said.
And the fire in the rebellion caught flame.

ADDENDUM
On the morning of September 27, 2025, I asked ChapGPT to draw a picture of Ailana Geven in a steampunk setting. No guidelines. It drew the image for "The Jump" and I then prompted it to create a story to go with that image.Typically, it knows that I mean caption for Instagram. This time, it wrote nine chapters!
So, I am pleased to present Queen Of The Rail Yards, my ChatGPT's first novella!
