Chapter 06: MANY HANDS by Emma Knox
Good morning, everybody. I hope you all had a good week. I did, and this morning, it got a little better.
Noah didn’t have work today, so like he does when he’s off, he helped me and Addison clean up after had breakfast. That’s come to be my favorite thing in the mornings. Not cleaning up! Us all eating and catching up.
Well, when we were done, I told Addison and Noah there was a big donation at work—at New Hope’s homeless ministry—and I needed to go see about it. Noah asked if it would help for him to come, and of course I said yes.
“Granny used to say, ‘many hands makes work light’!”
He laughed. “My grandpa used to say that.”
Now, Noah’s from Tennessee, near Knoxville, so I guess me and him have similar cultures, since I’m from Mississippi. Just plain folks, you know.
So, he was surprised I had to go down in the basement, but I told him that’s where the storage was, and that they had a few emergency beds there. We got to the church and Rev. McWilliams was there.
I introduced them, and the minister shook Noah’s hand. “Call me ‘Steve.’”
I told Rev. McWilliams Noah was an EMT, and he said, “Well… that’s a little providential. We had a man come in last night. I think he’s got a broken wrist.”
Noah shook his head. “I can’t make a diagnosis like that.”
“Just tell him you’re an EMT and that he needs to let me take him to a clinic.”
Well, it worked and Rev. McWilliams took the man while Noah and me got to work on the shipment. It was real fun, to be honest, and we got everything put away.
On the way out to his car, he said it was fun, too, then he added, “You don’t happen to have a sister, do you?”
“No, why?” I asked.
Well, he hesitated, then said, “Many hands make work light. I just had a passing thought.”
Well, passing or not, he’s right. If everyone donated a little time or money, I wonder what all could get done?

Chapter 07: LIKE FAMILY by Noah Vale
I helped Emma at the church’s homeless program today, and she reminded me that I’m supposed to do an update post. Here goes.
I’ll be pretty brief. Work is okay. Some days, it’s just moving people from point A to point B for some treatment, then back to point A. Every so often, we get a trauma call, and that gets the adrenaline running.
Paul Charm and Rebecca Flint more or less told me I need to go ahead and enroll in paramedic school. I should have agreed to that when we got back from Colorado, but it’s all good. I probably should hit some refresher courses over the summer and start paramedic school in the fall.
Becoming part of The Pay It Forward Society seems more like joining a family of sorts. The guys are awesome and a lot of fun.
My dad died when I was seven, and my mom raised me on her own. She died just after I got my EMT back in 2024. Until moving in here, I really didn’t have much chance to make friends—not since high school.
So, hanging out with Merritt, Jacob—sometimes even Kent—and now Devon feels like good times with good people.
The girls—besides Hannah—are taken, if I’m reading things right. No one’s saying so, but I think Addison and Jacob are heading towards something. Izzy and Kent are out in the open dating. And Merritt and Emma spend a lot of time with each other.
Hannah and I get third-wheel duty sometimes. A few times, we’ve had double third-wheel—both of us with one of the other couples.
Hannah’s fun and smart, and we get along. Not much more to say about it.
But…
Well, I almost showed my hand today. I asked Emma if she had a sister… and you might guess what that meant. I possibly covered my tracks.
No hate for Merritt, but he’s pretty lucky, if you ask me. I’m not trying to take Emma from him.
It’s like seeing a guy with a tough car. You don’t want his car… you want a car like his.
Same.
Well, that’s my update. Not sure if it was what was expected, but I did it.
Be your best you!
