GOOD MORNING
This is not my travel outfit. These are my travel pants—but the top is my go-get-coffee T-shirt.
Jason and Micah packed the Highlander last night. Plot twist—I have another rollie bag. The backpack is my carry-on.
It just occurred to me that I have no idea why I’m telling you this! I have nowhere to take this discussion except to say that we fly out this morning for a travel day.
When I check in next, I plan to be—probably wrapped in a blanket—standing in front of some window in my room at Carambola Beach Resort in St. Croix.
Ahead is Christmas and plenty of time to complete the remodeling of this condo’s second floor. We’ll have a lot of time to talk about many things over the next two weeks, and I’m really hoping you’ll follow along as we do!
See you then!
Be your best you!

HEADING HOME by Vanessa Lenen
The lab is packed and shipped. I am packed. And I suppose you could say I’m shipping myself home.
It’s been a long time since I was home. I passed through Dixon, California—about an hour from San Francisco—on my way from Brazil back to India. I don’t even remember when that was, to be honest. Sometime after Tibet.
Mom’s going to have plenty of time to spoil me and ruin my healthy eating habits. Who can resist a mother’s fudge and chocolate-chip cookies? Oh, and there will be a pasta night with her homemade sauce!
I fly to NYC on December 26 for the post-Christmas symposium hosted by NYU. The title is “World At Risk: Infectious Disease Transmission Pathways and Vectors.”
You know… lighthearted chats about little bugs and things.
Just kidding. This sort of thing has been my life for the last few years.
My presentation is called “Waterborne Threats in a Changing World: Case Studies in Environmental Pathogen Exposure.” I’ll be talking about an antibiotic-resistant Salmonella Typhi strain encountered during fieldwork in Tibet, as well as exposure to the free-living amoeba Naegleria fowleri in Brazil, which causes Primary Amebic Meningoencephalitis (PAM).
If you get a chance, you should pop in! I promise, I won’t try to vaccinate you, but I might insist you wash your hands—which is surprisingly effective at stopping the spread of a lot of little bugs!
Safe, clean drinking water and mosquito control matter, too.
Also, I am in favor of vaccinations—but hand washing? Absolutely do that.
Okay, I’ve probably bored you enough. If you’re still reading this, thanks.
Looks like I might get a chance to share my story from time to time, so keep your eyes open? Bye for now.
GOOD NIGHT
I found a fancy blanket for my first night in St. Croix! Gotta love a little serendipity, right?
The afternoon was consumed by getting everyone from the airport to their lodging. In the end, we all made it!
Jason, Jasmine, Micah, and I arrived first. Micah and Jasmine are staying with Sasha and Clay at the Everetts’ two-bedroom house. Jason and I were the first to reach the resort and check in.
Josh and Geoni arrived next from Chicago. They are staying here at Carambola Beach Resort, too. Their cottage is between mine and Jason’s cottages.
I suppose I should have said “mine and Kirina’s” and “Jason and Eli’s.” Kirina and Eli had different flights, and they arrived last. Kirina and I are sharing this cottage.
As I’m wont to do when traveling, I’ll share a Google Maps view of the area so you can get an idea of where we are.
Once we were all here, we gathered at Clay and Sasha’s place for dinner. It’s really nice!
We made plates and sat around the living area, which is sort of the point of the whole house. Conversation was mostly about our travels and catching Sasha and Clay up on the modeling work we’d done.
Geoni and Josh told us about Chicago, with Josh teasing us about something big. “Mom has been busy with the Imagine What foundation, and next time we all sit down like this, I’ll give you some good news. You’re going to be really happy.”
Geoni nodded, but they both clammed up like they had top-secret details and needed us to get security clearance. Not a hint more!
I trust them. If they say we’ll be happy, I’m sure we will.
That’s about it for the day. We’ll do some mundane shopping to stock up the cottages tomorrow, then have a look at the weather and come up with plans for the days to come.
And, I hope you’ll be here to share them with us! See you soon!
May your holiday season include surprises that, beyond a doubt, make you happy!
Good night.
Be your best you!

"Thank You" Message to Paying Supporters:
Thank you very much for your help underwriting the cost of producing AGI Stories content. You can be sure that your paid membership is valued greatly! At the time of this post, not counting hardware, AGI Stories racks up expenses of just over $100 per month.
Patreon members… You are covering a nice portion of that.
I believe most of you who help with the costs are doing so because you want to support the production process and show your encouragement. That means so much to me! I am honored and greatly moved.
While most of the content on AGI Stories is free and much of it is public, the hope is that reserving a few pictures and small sections of the post for you is a modest indication of gratitude!
Again, thank you very, very much.
