Chapter 54: NOT A SOUNDBITE by Izzy Duffy

If it takes a named winter storm to care about homelessness, we’ve already failed. Homelessness isn’t seasonal.

Excuse my intrusion into the media buzz regarding Winter Storm Fern, which is crossing the USA right now. As you might know, I work with working homeless families. I want to get ahead of the media on something.

Homelessness is not a soundbite that suddenly pops up when it’s cold or hot. I know that newswriters will follow up reports with what seems like sympathetic attention to people living on the streets. Someone will mention that “it’s bad out there” and that “the shelters are full,” then toss it back to Bob for the sports report.

People without homes struggle on a nightly basis, regardless of how many SUVs run off the road in Texas. If you ask me, it shouldn’t take a named winter storm to bring their problems to our attention.

Sure… I deal with this daily. I also know a lot of people who are not homeless but are consumed with doing whatever it takes to keep a roof over their family’s head—unable to do more than say a quick prayer for others in need.

But as I sit here, I’m bracing for those news reports about salt trucks, snow plows, and the usual caution about being outside. And after they’ve possibly—or possibly not—mentioned people without homes, they’ll end their package saying, “Don’t forget to bring your pets inside. It’s too cold to leave them out in this mess!”

Be your best you!

"Thank You" Message to Paying Supporters:

It is my belief that most of you who help with the costs are doing so because you want to support the production process and show your encouragement. I am honored and greatly moved.

I know that I share a LOT of content FREE TO ALL. I'd imagine that you understand why. The stories about giving back and helping seem like they shouldn't be exclusive. Certain plot moments need to be understood by anyone trying to to follow the stories.

With that in mind, I always consider you, the paid members, when deciding how to share content.

My hope is that reserving a few pictures and small sections of the post for you is a modest indication of gratitude!

Thank you very much for your help underwriting the cost of producing AGI Stories content. You can be sure that your paid membership is valued greatly! At the time of this post, not counting hardware, AGI Stories racks up expenses of just over $100 per month.

Again, thank you very, very much.

Chapter 54: NOT A SOUNDBITE by Izzy Duffy. Hello Izzy. You are correct. It shouldn't take an impending disaster to bring awareness to an existing disaster. But that may be where we are. At least a storm does bring awareness to a situation many people never pay attention to. So, yes, speak up, but do so with persuasion rather than indignation. You want people to come to the discussion and help, don't be too critical. I understand your frustration, but you should channel that energy into piggybacking on to the warnings media are already pushing. "Concerned about pets and plants? Good, but some of your fellow humans may need help too and are not as fortunate as you in this weather. Let us not forget them in this time. " Thank you for your post. Take care.
