Chapter 60: NORMAL BUT NOT by Hannah Madison

If I were to boil tonight down to a single idea, it would be this: be careful what you ask for.

Shay was born into a family with the kind of wealth that puts her father (as they say) at the table with the likes of the director of the FBI. His international shipping business cooperates on national security matters.

A lot of us think we’d like to have wealth at that level. Shay just wants to be a normal girl doing normal things.

I got into the black Tahoe to go out with Shay and Devon, and Eric Marten was driving.

“Hey, Hannah,” he said, “how’s things with you?”

I’ve noticed Eric acts as social liaison for Shay sometimes.

Devon was up front with Eric. I got into one of the second-row captain’s chairs beside Shay and noticed another guard in the back.

Eric introduced Conner Wiltshire to me, then drove away. Eric introduced Conner Wiltshire to me, then drove away. Devon explained the plan. Instead of trying to park and come in, Eric would stay with the Tahoe, and Conner would come inside the pizza place with us. Shay was clearly not happy.

“Eric, it’s really not necessary. Please…”

Eric was nice about it, but essentially he said her choice was that Conner could come in with her acting like a normal part of the party, or he could come in and act like a security guard. Shay opted for normal.

Eric tried to explain the urgency. “Things around the world are sketchy these days. Did you see the news about the mayor in the Philippines being attacked by an RPG?”

He went on to say that Mr. Ryder had been advised to heighten family and corporate security. Shay still wasn’t happy.

“I just want to be a normal girl who can have her boyfriend walk her to the door without a guard having to turn his back.”

That was the mood going into the cafe.

But Devon was the master of making it work. By the time the pizza hit the table, the mood was calm and semi-normal. Shay relaxed and let Devon carry the social workings. He pulled Conner and me into discussions about his work with Tom, which connects to Shay’s work.

I’ll close by saying it was actually a fun night. Props to Devon, for sure.

Chapter 60: NORMAL BUT NOT by Hannah Madison. Hi Hannah. Getting into a mysterious black Tahoe to go for pizza sounds kind of celebrity-ish. Fun. Maybe a little intimidation, at first. But, from your description, it sounds like it turned out to be a pleasant outing. Kind of cool, really.
