GOOD MORNING

Starting the day with some chicken biscuits and potato things! No regrets. Not one.

The plan for today is to knock off some miles rather steadily until we reach Fredericksburg, Texas. Josh wanted to get somewhere and stop to see if he can get a final edit on a travel article about the hotel in Incheon. Easier done if we’re not bouncing along at highway speeds hoping for a phone connection.

No one disagreed. There are a few small stops we’ll make to stretch legs and snap some quick pics, but mostly it will be rolling east.

I hope you had a chance to see Jasmine and Kirina’s pictures from their photoshoot yesterday. I think they did great, and last night Jasmine texted that Naomi agreed.

Also last night, Geoni checked her email to find word that her and Josh’s adoption process is proceeding as expected. And by “as expected,” she says they’re looking at around 12 to 15 weeks before everything is final. The preliminary matching process will start soon, so they are understandably getting excited.

I suppose I can work in one more logistics point… As we drove yesterday, Josh reprised his plan to get an Explorer for the Ryan family as well as something else for AGI to use so everyone isn’t dependent on the one Highlander. The working plan is a small plug-in hybrid à la a Prius, but not specifically that make or model. It would be for quick runs between the office and homes and the studio, or a fast errand.

I suppose that’s enough for now. I’ll check in for a goodnight later, so see you then!

Just in case anyone from Gen Z happens upon this post, let’s start by identifying my location. My parents had to come to one of these in order to do their term papers. I spent a lot of hours in libraries working on my degrees.

Today, they serve a lot more functions than just housing books and periodicals.I’m here getting some documents copied and notarized as I work toward earning my PBT (ASCP)—Phlebotomy Technician, ASCP credential. This is so I can collect data for the clinic’s research programs.

Here’s how it will work…

Dr. Kumar will issue standing orders under his medical license. That means he pre-authorizes specific procedures within defined protocols—blood draws, nasal swabs, capillary samples, specimen handling—so long as they are performed under the scope of practice tied to my credentials.

I’ll hold two credentials: my Advanced EMT license and my PBT (ASCP) certification. The Advanced EMT allows me to operate in field settings, assess patients, document findings, and follow medical directions. The PBT (ASCP) confirms I’m nationally certified to perform venipuncture and specimen collection in accordance with laboratory standards.

If I’m conducting community-based monitoring—for example, tracking antibody response after vaccination or collecting swabs during a localized outbreak—I won’t be diagnosing anyone independently. I’ll be collecting data under Dr. Kumar’s authority and within protocol.

Every sample chain will be documented. Every specimen will follow lab handling standards. If something falls outside the protocol, I stop and call.

I won't be out there freelancing medicine. I’ll be extending the clinic’s reach—with accountability, documentation, and a physician behind the work.

The data we collect will help inform understanding of vaccine efficacy within localized geographic areas. That’s where one of the grants is going, and that’s the one where I’ll be working the front lines.

Am I excited? You bet!

Be your best you!

BRUNCH IS A NO by Emily Amos

School just got out a while ago, and I came to the thrift shop. I guess I’m still processing something that happened in my 2-D art class.

This guy—a senior named Ian—and I have to share supplies. We were cleaning up at the end of the period.

“Emily, my sister,” he said, “got a painting in an art show at the park tomorrow.”

“Bruh… that’s fire.”

“It’s a brunch, and she gave me two tickets. You want to go with me?”

“Like a date?” Seniors don’t usually ask out sophomores.

“No, just like we go. Eat some food. Look at stuff.”

I skipped to my next concern. “It’s a brunch? Like fancy and everything?”

“It’s in a park, but a little fancy.”

I handed him the box of colored pencils to put away. “I don’t think so. I’m not really into fancy art shows.”

As of now, I don’t even own a skirt that fits. I got one from like two years and twenty pounds ago. I’m in the thrift store just thinking about buying one, but I know I won’t.

“It’s not a date.” Ian seemed to want to clear that up. “I graduate in May. I’m going to the Navy. I’m not trying to start anything.”

“I get it. I just don’t have anything to wear for a fancy art brunch. Honestly.”

“You look fine like that.”

“Stop… I appreciate the invite. But… I’ll pass.”

The truth is, I wouldn’t mind going to the brunch, just to go. Ian’s not creepy or anything, either. And I could buy a good-enough skirt here for about half an hour’s work.

But I don’t even want to spend even that on something for just one brunch. I have dreams for things to get better, and buying something I’d wear once isn’t part of my plan.

GOOD NIGHT

We made it to Fredericksburg as planned. There was a long afternoon spent working in the lobby and one of the hotel’s unused meeting rooms. (Thank you front desk!)

We found a nice locally owned restaurant for dinner. It was one of those places that people who’ve lived here a long time know about.

I think every community has one of those. No national chain. No glitzy advertising. Just good food on a menu printed at the UPS Store, copied in the office…

We went to Hondo's on Main. It’s definitely the kind of place you hear about from someone who grew up here. Nothing polished. Nothing curated for tourists. Just picnic tables, cold drinks, and food that tastes like it’s been made the same way for years.

It’s relaxed, a little loud, and completely unpretentious. You sit down, exhale, and realize you didn’t need anything fancy after all.

After dinner, we came back to the hotel. The married couples went to their rooms. Jason and I sat in the hotel lobby. Our conversation was mostly incidental, but we bounced into life after marriage a few times.

We also spent a little while talking about the marriage planned for early June. We have put a date on the calendar now—June 5, officially. Any earlier mentions of dates (such as the 6th) have been recanted.

Everything is moving forward nicely!

May your life unfold with graceful transitions between many meaningful moments, ever leading you toward not only what you need but also what gives you peace and joy.

Good night.

Be your best you!

GOOD MORNING. Good morning to you. Knocking off miles does seem a good plan. Glad Jason is able to work on the road. Also glad Josh and Geoni have some positive news. It can be a long wait. Sounds like a productive day ahead. Happy trails!

SIGNED AND NOTORIZED by Vanessa Lenen. Nice dress, Vanessa! Nice! Um, okay, granted, libraries do more than house books today. I'm impressed with your plans, Vanessa. I wouldn't be a bit surprised if , in 3 years, you become a full phlebotomist rather than a PBT. Of course, may your skills include finding a vein properly to puncture without your patient grimacing in anguish like I usually do. Tracking antibody response after vaccination is almost essential data to have for accurate, further research. You will be working the front lines. Good luck to you. Thanks for the update and info.

BRUNCH IS A NO by Emily Amos. It's too bad, really. I'm sorry, Emily. Most people have no idea what ground level survival is like. And they shouldn't . Not in the U.S. , anyway. At least you are determined to fight for a better life. Good luck.
