Chapter 90: SHE’S NOT WRONG by Noah Vale

Emma’s made a couple of comments recently about her and my housing situation. If you ask me, she’s not wrong to be concerned about the long silence of our benefactor, the Pay It Forward Society.

The silence is, as they say, deafening.

It’s so bad that Paul and Rebecca started up an online computer logistics consulting business just to keep from being bored. And what I just told you is everything I actually know about it.

As for Emma and me, if The Society stopped paying our rent, there would have to be some big changes.

I make $19.50 an hour. It was barely enough for me to keep my one-room loft above a muffler shop off Avenue Z in Sheepshead Bay. I don’t know what the rent for Tom Jenkins’s micros at Crossroads is supposed to be, but maybe I could manage it.

Emma makes enough money at the church to do some thrift-store shopping and buy a few groceries. I buy groceries, too, and keep them at her and Hannah’s apartment. Emma and I cook together there when I’m not on duty.

If she lost her apartment…there’s no real plan, to be honest. If she wanted to stay in NYC, she’d have to get a full-time job somewhere. Or she could see if her cousin in Clarksdale would let her move back there. Or something we’ve not talked about.

Right now, everyone close to her says stay in school and don’t worry. Even Paul—who has the biggest beef with The Society—says not to worry.

In his words, “The blokes are paying to park two Expeditions and a Gulfstream. Rent’s paid up through the end of May, like always… Who knows what’s going on, but I wouldn’t panic.”

I’ll close by saying that the uncertainty in all this is a factor in how we’re planning our dating relationship. We’re really close, but we’re taking our time.

She said this: “We ain’t living on a tenant farm outside Vicksburg. No one’s gonna call a 23-year-old an old maid in Brooklyn.”

If you missed it, she turned 21 this year.

Chapter 91: GUARD DUTY by Conner Wiltshire

Today has been fairly slow around Crossroads. Olivia and I ended up in the common area after lunch, where we caught up on Best Price Office emails.

We’d been done for a while when Olivia looked up from her phone and turned to me. “Which one of us is on duty?”

I lowered my book. “What difference does it make?”

She gave me a mischievous look. “Whichever one of us is off duty should go down the street to the deli and bring back some subs for dinner.”

I laid my book on the table. “I’ll go get my wallet. Same order as last time?”

Message to Paying Supporters:

Thank you for helping support AGI Stories.

I always consider you—the paid members—when deciding how content is shared.

I believe that most of you who help with the costs do so because you want to support the production process and show encouragement. I’m honored and truly grateful.

At the time of this post (not counting hardware or internet costs), expenses run just over $100 per month—so every supporter truly makes a difference.

Nevertheless, I share a lot of content free to all. I believe you understand why. Stories about giving back and helping shouldn’t be exclusive, and key moments need to be accessible for anyone following the stories.

My hope is that sharing a few exclusive photos and small portions of some posts with you serves as a simple expression of gratitude.

With that in mind, again, thank you very much.

Chapter 90: SHE’S NOT WRONG by Noah Vale. Hi Noah. I think it's fine to be concerned about the Society. I have my own theory about who they are. But, as long as they are actually paying the bill, why not go along? I get that Commander Charm (Retired) is more frustrated than most, what with a wedding coming up and he is the de facto leader of the band. And, as you say, big changes would have to be made if the money stopped. It's fine taking your time, just don't let rust creep in, always make sure you are on the same page and moving forward. Thanks for your post.
