Chapter 122: I CANNOT LIE by Paul Charm
Today’s post is about the difference between telling a lie and being deceptive. Call it integrity.
On May 19, I misled Merritt regarding rent payments from Pay It Forward Society. It was intentional and meant to ease everyone’s mind.
What I said was not exactly what he reported. He told everyone, “Paul said to say that the rent got paid at midnight Monday. He thought that was important for you to know.”
What I actually said was, “According to Tom, if the rent isn’t paid on the 15th as usual, it gets paid at midnight on Monday. Let everyone know there’s no reason to worry.”
What I said was technically true if you camp out on the word “usual.” My instruction to let everyone know was more hopeful than intentionally deceptive. I fully believed what I was saying, more or less.
I said it with the hope everyone would calm down, and they did.
Monday was the 18th. Merritt reported that on the 19th. Everyone relaxed, and the rest of the month passed.
But the rent didn’t get paid.
So, points awarded for good intentions. Points lost for lack of integrity.
I’ll also add that Rebecca and I did not get our May 15 or May 30 salary checks. Kudos to us for having savings, I suppose.
I just left a meeting with Tom. He says not to worry, that he’s not going to kick anyone out.
“I’ll talk to Shay’s old boss at Habitat Housing and touch base with Izzy,” he said. “I can get a form saying that Crossroads Phase I was a temporary Stop-Gap Homes site and write off the rent like I do all the other Stop-Gap units. It won’t be a problem for June.”
What is a problem is that Rebecca and I have missed a month of salary with our wedding plans set for the 27th. No need to go into those details… They are about to change.
There’s another layer to this mess, but I’ll let Rebecca go into that.
Meanwhile, here’s to free coffee gift cards…

Chapter 123: WINDING DOWN by Emma Knox
Hey, everyone. I hope you are doing well today. I’m pretty good.
I’m about to finish my first full term at Kingsborough Community College. I think it went well. Officially, the Spring Regular Academic Session ends on June 17, but I’ve got most of my work done and just need to get ready for exams.
Of course, I’m planning to keep going with school. I know this is just a start, and I have a long way to go, but if you’re not going somewhere, you’ll never get anywhere, right?
I was going out earlier today when Paul Charm was going into the office part of Tom’s theater. I asked him about the wedding, and he said, “Hold that thought! We just thought of something different.”
So, the secret wedding plans are now getting changed to a new secret. I’m sure it will be lovely, no matter what happens.
I thought I’d pick another Bible verse and leave it today, since a few people said they liked it when I did that before. Here goes.
Hebrews 1:10–12:
10 He also says, “In the beginning, Lord, you laid the foundations of the earth, and the heavens are the work of your hands.
11 They will perish, but you remain; they will all wear out like a garment.
12 You will roll them up like a robe; like a garment they will be changed. But you remain the same, and your years will never end.” (NIV)
When I come across that earlier today, it reminded me that God is so much bigger than everything we worry about. I hope you remember that if you ever get down about something.
I’ll see you next time! Thanks for reading my story!

With that in mind, again, thank you very much.
