STOCKING UP by Vanessa Lenen
Nothing to see here. Just two women who are working Saturday, stocking up our pantries and fridges.
But if you were here, you might be more interested in what you’d hear. Olivia and I have been talking about a case that came in last week.
“So, the appendicitis girl’s father came to thank you for sitting with her?” I asked.
“He did. Dan Mercer. His daughter, Jenna, was Anika’s patient.”
I smiled. ““And the fact that Jenna wasn’t your patient turned out to…open doors for you…”
“Doors?” She tried to sound innocent.
“Coffee the day after… Dinner Friday? You know… Doors…”
Olivia smiled. “Coffee went great. We talked until he decided he’d left Jenna at home with the other teens long enough. We’ve texted a couple of times since then. He has an early patrol on Friday, and I have a half-day shift handling walk-ins at the clinic. The timing worked out.”
“I see…” That seemed like an open-ended reply that she could take a lot of different ways.
“He’s going to text when he gets home. Our excuse for dinner is that Jenna wanted her turn to thank me. She’s coming to dinner with us.”
“Oh,” I replied. “So you’re exploiting his daughter as a reason to have dinner?”
“I wouldn’t use that word! We’re letting that be our reason. Plus, if the wheels come off, we can say it was just closing the loop on my day with Jenna.”
Her answer sounded suspiciously well thought out. “Did… did you and Dan talk through all that?”
She smiled and looked away. “Maybe…”
I shook my head. “I don’t think the wheels are coming off Friday.”
We actually put a few things in our shopping carts—trolleys, if you’re in the UK. Then I decided to tease her a little.
“Hey…”
She looked at me. “Yes?”
“You gonna let her call you ‘Mom’ if she wants to?”
Ladies and gentlemen, Olivia has left the building.
Not really. She went for canned goods.
SUPER SUMMER by Brooks McKenna
I will never forget this summer. I’m not exaggerating.
I’m sixteen—a milestone age in our culture. I have a job. I’m going to get my license. I’ll be a junior this fall. They’re all markers in a teen’s life that separate childhood from adulthood.
Oh, I know I’m far from independent. But I think I’m on my way—give me a decade!
Another reason this summer is unforgettable is that I have a boyfriend. Not a passing-notes-in-middle-school relationship—one that means something.
When Mateo and I realized two days ago that we both had this afternoon free, he asked if we could spend the day together.
“It will be a real date,” he said. “Not just us meeting between shifts or at the end of the day.”
My dad’s a captain with Epic Charters Unlimited. The marina he works from is near Pirate’s Landing, and there’s a big fishing pier here. We took the Island Metro over to Port Isabel. We caught Dad between his morning charter and a second one for the afternoon. He showed Mateo his boat.
Dad is the captain of a 2018 Grady-White Express 370 owned by the charter company. It has three huge Yamahas, which impressed Mateo a lot! Dad mostly takes small groups into the Gulf for snapper, kingfish, cobia, and amberjack. Sometimes, he takes small groups out overnight.
After that, Mateo and I had lunch at Pirate's Landing Restaurant. It felt like a real date with servers taking our order and bringing us food.
After lunch, we walked out onto the fishing pier. I guess the mood got serious. We talked about life after high school. Mateo will graduate next spring, and he says he honestly has no idea what to do.
I have more time, but I don’t know either. I like meeting people, and I think I catch on fast. Mateo said maybe a job in sales or management would fit me.
But for now, we’re going to keep enjoying what we have. We’ll keep the future in mind, but not let it ruin the present.
