WEDNESDAY AFTERNOON by Emma Vale

Good afternoon, everyone. I’m in the bedroom at our home in Eads. It’s Wednesday, and I’ve been here all day. Noah went to work at ten this morning, and he’s doing “a twelve” again today.

When he gets home, me and Noah usually stay up a little while so we can talk and have some time together. Then we sleep in a little the next morning. It is not a normal schedule, but we are getting used to it.

I’m washing the bed linens today. Don’t worry…I just got out of the shower, so I’m not getting the mattress too dirty.

I’m sitting here with my MacBook, Googling questions about the class I start next week. I’m trying to get ahead before it begins. I’ve been looking up things about assignments, online access, what I should bring, and how much reading I might have. I know I can’t learn the whole class before the first day, but I feel better when I know what to expect.

Noah is off for the next three days on account he worked four twelves. We are going to rest some, but we also want to start cleaning out the barn.

We don’t plan to finish it all at once. There are old boxes, loose boards, things left behind, and places where we need to look carefully before moving anything. We’re going to make one pile for trash, one for things we might use, and one for anything we need to ask about before throwing it away. If we get one clear corner, I’ll count that as progress.

Thinking about school and that barn made me think about how easy it is to feel overwhelmed when you look at everything at once.

James 1:5 says, “If any of you lacks wisdom, you should ask God, who gives generously to all without finding fault, and it will be given to you.” (NIV)

I don’t have to know every answer before I begin. I can ask God for wisdom, take the next right step, and trust that the rest will become clearer when I get there.

So today, the next step is laundry, a little studying, and waiting for Noah to come home.

Thanks for reading my story.
