HARMONIES by Kirina Yung

If you will allow me, I’d like to let my thoughts ramble a little. I’m thinking about music as a metaphor for life.

Particularly, I’m thinking about harmonies.

I had a loop playing this afternoon—but one note kept bothering me. Nothing was technically wrong with it. It just did not belong. I had to make a change.

In music, we say things are in harmony when the different pitches of the notes blend together in a way that is pleasing, in a way that our ears’ natural design finds pleasurable.

Not all pitches blend well. While dissonance has its place in music—an intentional jarring moment in a phrase that serves some artistic purpose—generally, the well-blended pitches that go together comfortably are preferred. Generally, harmony is more desirable than discord.

In life, ideas like finding your harmony and avoiding discord are not at all uncommon. The advice is not limited to musical analogies.

Stay away from toxic people.

Find your balance.

Keep healthy boundaries.

Find your center.

Enjoy the little things.

None of those should feel profound or new to you. But I want to go somewhere else.

If notes are the elements of music, we can say life, by analogy, is made up of many notes. As the notes in music combine to create a soundtrack, so too do the notes of your life combine.

Some notes come from you, your choices, your very soul. You choose the notes you wish to play.

Others enter without your control. Some combine with your notes to create harmony and a joyful melody. Some are discordant, dissonant, and disruptive.

So your soundtrack is partly what you compose and partly a result of everything else. Someone playing the cello on the street cannot control the taxi horns and engine revs that compete with her song.

So what’s the point? I ask this: what notes can you control?

Start with those. Remove the notes from the music of your life that play against those you wish most to be heard.
