Messy hair, mundane chores, and work moments were just as common as beach walks and glamorous dinners at fancy restaurants. Laundry was part of the story, too.

It was the kind of night when the heat rose up from everything in the room and gripped you in its unbearable arms. It got on you like the sun on a shadeless sidewalk in July.

Tyra Wilson’s apartment was supposed to be air-conditioned. She’d agree with that if it meant the failing unit churned out more noise than it did cool air. It sputtered and groaned, its tired heart pumping tepid air into a room that felt like a sealed oven.

She sat motionless on the sofa, thoroughly defeated by the July heat. Her skin was a slick sheet of glass; wherever her limbs crossed, skin stuck to skin with a stubborn, glue-like grip that made every slight movement a chore.

Sweat pooled in the small of her back like a warm, stagnant tide. The heavy fabric of the couch held her fast, like quicksand pulling her deeper into the swelter.

She remained trapped in the amber of a long, suffocating summer night that felt too much like the trap her past had left her in.

Even after a long day at work, home offered no relief from the heat. She’d do what she’d done every night for the past week—take a cool shower and a night sleeping atop the sheets.
