BETWEEN LOADS

Heather May dropped her Shreveport load the evening before, then learned the shipper had pushed her next pickup back. A staffing shortage and a broken loader had put production behind.

She could hunt another load or wait. Heather chose the wait, booked a cheap room, and planned lunch before heading to the plant.

Timing was gold in her business. The delay would put her about six hours late delivering in Dallas, but she should still make the Dallas pickup the next day. It meant a short night and a long stretch behind the wheel, but that beat losing the load and deadheading an empty semi 190 miles.

She woke before the alarm, showered until the water cooled, and stood in the bathroom with motel coffee while checking weather, traffic, messages, and the revised appointment. She dressed, packed what she had carried inside, checked beneath the bed, and headed out.

By late morning, Heather was seated in a truck-stop diner outside Shreveport with a burger, potatoes, and coffee strong enough to remove paint.

A driver at the counter glanced over. “You always look that good waiting on freight?”

Heather noticed his wedding ring. “Only when the loader’s broken. You should see me when the forklift works.”

He laughed and returned to his lunch.

Men had flirted with women drivers since women first climbed into trucks. Some were harmless. Some mistook politeness for interest. Others liked a woman who could handle forty tons until they discovered she could also tell them no.

Heather finished eating, paid, and carried her coffee toward the door. The factory came next. Then paperwork, a loaded trailer, Dallas, and whatever freight waited beyond it.

No former boyfriend, family expectation, or social convention owned the life she had built. The road accepted her as she was and never asked her to become smaller, softer, or easier to keep.

It asked only that she stay between the ditches.

Heather could live with that.
