Chapter 3.1.42: WEEKEND IN SIGHT by Hannah Madison

The weekend is coming faster than the work is getting done. I’m stressing a little. Mr. Robertson says I should relax.

He says it’s not my fault that the company has sent me off on suddenly necessary tasks all week. “You’re not used to missing deadlines, and that’s fine. But you can treat all the extra work I gave you without warning as extensions to those deadlines.”

All the same, I’d like to knock a few of those tasks off the list by the end of the day tomorrow. With that in mind, I’m up early and skipping community breakfast.

So Merritt is up early, too. In fact, he texted me that he’s showered, shaved, and about to get dressed. That means, essentially, he’s waiting for me.

Once we get to the office, he’s going to help me get started. My plan—which Mr. Robertson has tentatively approved—is to sit at a CAD station all day and get my designs ready for one of the project leads to review, revise if needed, and pass up the line. I’ve got little parts on four different projects.

I feel most like I’m doing engineering when I’m working on designs. I know that’s only one part of the whole process, but I guess it’s what most people picture when they think of engineering.

And talking about it won’t get it done, so I’ll close this chapter and get to the shower. Thanks for starting your day with me.

Chapter 3.1.43: SHOWER BEFORE JEEP by Mara Voss

Periodically, a girl wakes up and feels like she needs a shower before climbing into a Jeep for a road trip. At least I did today.

Evan and I are breaking camp, but we’re leaving his improvised shower behind and donating the tarp. We ran it by the owner, who said he’d add “campground shower” to the list of amenities. Marketing, right?

From Port Aransas, we detoured a good way inland. Our thought is that if anyone has actually been tracking Shay, they might get the idea that she was following the Gulf Coast. Because… you know… we were.

But after a couple of days inland, we feel like we can head back toward our soft goal. We want to stand where the Rio Grande meets the Gulf.

But our next stop is still inland. We’re heading for the La Quinta Inn & Suites by Wyndham Raymondville. We’ll crash there tonight and stay until checkout tomorrow. After that, we’ll figure out what’s next.

But before we leave, I’m waiting for Evan to lug about forty pounds of water over to the shower for me. What a champ!

I honestly feel blessed to have him as a decoy partner and boyfriend.

Also… before you get any ideas about the robe… it’s mostly lined.
