Chapter 3.1.44: GO NO FARTHER by Mara Voss
If we go any farther, we’ll need passports. That’s not part of the plan.
Evan and I have been debating: Are we on the bank of the Rio Grande or the beach of the Gulf? Or both?
Either way, we are on the U.S.-Mexico border. Almost. Looking at Google Maps, the boundary line actually clips a little bit of the peninsula on the other side. All the same, we’re not going for a swim, so we’re calling this the end.
Goal achieved.
The Rio Grande enters the Gulf of Mexico east of Brownsville, Texas, and Matamoros, Mexico. It’s south of a relatively small resort town—South Padre Island, Texas. It is also only a few miles from Starbase, Texas, where SpaceX has its launch site.
Getting to where we are wasn’t trivial, but remember… we have big tires!
We were looking across the river at people in Mexico—surreal—when we saw a group approaching with a camera.
“No way paparazzi followed us here,” Evan said.
“Looks like a family,” I replied.
I think I was right. They never spoke to us, but we waved when we happened to make eye contact.
Since we are heading west next, we thought we’d stay in the resort town for a couple of nights. Once we get to Laredo, we’ll post on Shay’s Facebook page about our stay in South Padre Island.
From Laredo, we jog north to I-10 and turn left. We’ll move pretty steadily, stopping at motels along the way. Preferably with pools.
