GOOD MORNING by Ailana Geven Keller

Today started with me overthinking what to do for the Good Morning chapter image.

“Don’t stress out,” Jason said. “Do you want to do the thing where you use a shower picture to save time?”

“I hate falling back on a cliché! I should be more original. Just because it’s a busy day is no reason not to be creative.”

It went like that for a few minutes before I gave up and grabbed a blanket. So much for originality…

It will be a busy day. There’s no joke about that. We have the photo shoot today and the client has sent a lot of outfits and accessories. The shot list is long, but Sasha and Jasmine have everything organized.

The ladies we know from the clinic are coming over as their schedules allow. Vanessa, Min, and Isabela all agreed to pose for a few looks. Of course, Izzy is on board. Kirna, too…

Kaylee, Jasmine, Geoni, Naomi, and the two models here for the boot camp are all scheduled for the full day. Sasha is standing down today—and probably until after Baby Everett arrives in January.

I’m actually not planning on modeling today. I’ll focus on being the art director and boot camp instructor.

That’s the plan. I need to finish getting dressed and head to the studio. See you there a little later.

MODELING BOOT CAMP by Ailana Geven Keller

Today’s shoot features colors, layers, and textures. Sasha and Jasmine lined up the whole group of models to be photographed in at least one outfit. We’re also running modeling boot camp today.

It’s going great. Nadia Lozano has a strong commercial look, but we’re working on slowing her transitions and giving each pose time to become a complete picture. Danielle Okafor has wonderful presence, so her challenge is loosening up, breaking symmetry, and letting her expression change with the outfit.

A few of the outfits raised some eyebrows. Kaylee taught that lesson.

“Give me the dumbest outfits. I’ll laugh when I cash the check.”

I’ve spent a lot of time calling this “pretending to teach,” but I’m not doing that today. I know what I’m looking for, and I know how to help them find it.

We’re working on weight distribution, hand placement, body lines, continuity, expression, and the difference between wearing clothes and presenting an idea. I’m also teaching them to hold a pose long enough for the photographer to refine it.

The looks are part of a capsule we’re calling Chromatic Rebellion. The common language is bright color, cropped or off-shoulder tops, short silhouettes, visible layering, statement eyewear, and bold leg styling. Familiar casual pieces are being pushed into editorial territory. Nadia’s look is youthful and graphic. Danielle’s is sharper and polished. Jasmine’s feels like bold street fashion.

Then there’s Naomi.

Naomi is forty-nine, and she absolutely belongs in this campaign. Her pink mesh top, denim shorts, gray tank top, and heavy leg warmers give her a relaxed commercial look that keeps the collection from becoming four versions of the same outfit. She isn’t trying to look twenty-five. She’s showing that confidence, proportion, styling, and presence do not come with an expiration date.

We still have a lot of work to do, but I wanted to stop long enough to share a few thoughts and pictures. I’ll be back later to let you know how the rest of boot camp goes. See you then.

Danielle is the other inexperienced model attending Wednesday’s boot camp. She is Nigerian American and recently moved from Houston to Corpus Christi after finishing college. Danielle is tall, lean, and athletic, with deep brown skin, short natural curls, prominent cheekbones, and a calm, observant personality. She played collegiate volleyball and is comfortable being watched, but she interprets posing directions very literally and tends to square her shoulders, lock her knees, and hold one serious expression. Her training will focus on asymmetrical body lines, relaxed movement, facial range, and maintaining continuity while transitioning between athletic, commercial, and editorial poses.

I used some of that in the chapters!

Then I told it what they were wearing and let it draw the images. Now, my prompt for the outfits was pretty detailed, but just went with the bodies, faces, and hairs that ChatGPT came up with.

That's all… I just thought you might wonder how I came up with so much detail about two NPC that are not planned for any future arcs…

END OF AN ERA by Kirina Yung

I’ve made no secret that I was part of a K-pop group. I left that world in late 2023 when I decided not to renew my contract with the label.

When you see a K-pop girl group, you probably aren’t surprised to find that its members are in their late teens or early twenties. But you might be surprised to learn that, before they first appear in a video or onstage, they may have already been training together for years.

My path to Stellar—our group’s name was inspired by a far more successful group with a similarly astronomical-sounding name—began when I was twelve and performing in regional talent competitions. I was scouted and signed as a trainee. Four years later, in 2016, Stellar made its public debut.

In the nearly three years since I left the group, Stellar has ridden the afterglow of our best years—which, oddly enough, came during the pandemic, when our videos went viral.

I thought Stellar was part of my past. Until a little while ago.

I received a call from the label. The group will officially disband at the end of this year.

They want to hold a farewell concert featuring all of the original members. It will be on New Year’s Eve as part of a major Seoul celebration. Stellar will perform in the middle of the event.

The commitment is hefty. Between now and October, each member will do conditioning and individual training. Beginning in October, we’ll all be in Korea training together until the concert.

I told them I would do it.

The compensation is equally hefty. I’ll be paid enough that I can hire someone to take my place here at Sea Glass and still come out way ahead.

But more than that, it will bring complete and final closure to a part of my life that spanned my teen and young adult years. When I didn’t renew my contract, it felt like I’d ended the story with an ellipsis. This concert will serve as the final full stop.

Ailana’s Journal | GOOD NIGHT by Ailana Geven Keller—The day has come to an end. It was long, but we got the work done—and I think we did it well.

The studio isn’t a disaster, but there’s some tidying up to do. Jason will do that tomorrow. It turns out he has several headshot clients coming in throughout the morning, so he’ll be here and can clean up between appointments.

I’ll be back at my laptop working. Naomi wants to come by and talk about the boot camp. I admire that she’s always looking for ways to improve things and expand her business—not by pursuing growth simply for the sake of getting bigger, but by meaningfully adding value to what she can offer her clients.

And having her include AGI in that is amazing.

That’s all for now, I think. Emily and Kel rode Island Metro over, so the four of us are going to Pirate’s Landing for dinner. Then we’re back home to get ready for tomorrow.
