Dawn to the east made a lazy attempt to stake a claim on a new day. The darkness of night gave ground, slowly graying toward morning, but there seemed to be no urgency in the transition.

Emma Vale stood in the kitchen and looked across the back of her property to the woods that lay at the edge of the grass. A light fog lingered in low places, undisturbed by even the slightest breeze.

Something about what she saw moved her—called her not just to witness its final fleeting moments, but to feel the cool air and wet grass in their midst.

So she went.

She did not bother dressing for the occasion. There was no audience, no schedule, and no reason to make the moment more complicated than it was. She slipped outside as she was, barefoot and quiet, and followed the edge of the yard toward the trees.

The grass was cool and wet beneath her feet. The air carried that soft early-morning chill that would be gone long before breakfast was over. Near the woods, the world felt hushed, as if the day had not fully decided to begin.

Emma slowed her steps and let herself take it in. The mist hung lightly among the grass and at the border of the trees. The darker shapes of the woods still held on to the night, while the open yard had already started surrendering to morning.

She stood there for a while, breathing the cool air and enjoying the kind of peace that could not be forced and never lasted very long. In a little while the sun would lift higher, the haze would burn away, and ordinary things would begin asking for attention.

But for the moment, there was only damp grass, soft light, and the quiet company of a waking day.
