GOOD MORNING by Ailana Geven Keller

I’ve been up for a while. Today’s a big day—Emily’s final custody hearing is this morning—and I woke up a few hours ago.

My stirring around woke up Jason, so we’ve been talking. We can’t imagine any outcome other than the judge making the custody decision final. Emily’s mother—also my mother—is wanted on felony charges and is still at large. I’m the only other known blood relative available to care for her.

“I’m sure everything will be fine,” Jason said as we made coffee.

“Emily and I said the same thing last night.”

Emily appeared at just that moment. “What did I say last night?”

I looked at her. “That everything will be fine.”

“It has to be,” she replied. “For real, I can’t go back to foster care. I just can’t.”

Jason put his arm around her shoulder. “Josh had the lawyers prepare an appeal already. That might not be the right word for it, but you get the idea.”

I repeated what we’d said before. “It makes no sense for there to be any other decision. This is just a formality.”

I truly believe that. But we won’t know for sure until a few hours from now. So, hopefully, I’ll check in with no surprises.

See you then.

HEARING UPDATE by Ailana Geven Keller

First off, everything is fine. Second of all, there was a surprise, but not what I expected.

The judge ruled that Emily will remain permanently in Jason’s and my care. I’ll spare you all the legal jargon. Texas calls the arrangement managing conservatorship. In everyday language, Jason and I now have the legal authority to care for her.

That wasn’t the surprise.

We got out of the hearing, hugged, shook hands, thanked Josh and Geoni for all the legal help, then headed to the parking lot. We made plans for lunch and headed for the Highlander.

Now for the surprise. The source? Well, it had to be Emily, right?

She started by reiterating her happiness. “This is the best day I can remember. It feels great to know it’s for real.”

Geoni replied, “We’re all happy for you. Two years of high school left. The time will fly by.”

We got moving, buckled up, and pulled into traffic. Then Emily’s surprise came.

“So, now that I have legal guardians, Kel and I want to ask you something.”

My mind raced through all the possible reasons they might need a legal guardian. For some reason, it got stuck on marriage, which I literally prayed was not going to be the question.

“What’s on your mind?” Jason replied.

“We’ve been thinking a lot since we left on Route 66…”

I still wasn’t relieved.

She went on. “… We’ve already been studying. Can we get our learner licenses? Kel’s needs state approval, but now Ailana can sign for mine.”

Learner licenses… I can handle that.

WHY ME? by Danielle Whitaker

I have known Naomi Prior for years. As her attorney, I’ve worked with her on contracts, intellectual property, licensing, and general business matters—which is where my practice focuses.

Along the way, the relationship has drifted closer to friendship—though there’s always been an appropriate recognition of the professional boundary.

This week, that relationship shifted again.

“I want you to model for me,” Naomi said.

She explained her idea of managing a group of women whose ages are closer to fifty than to twenty. It’s a new angle for her successful model management company.

“I have never modeled,” I told her. “Why me?”

She didn’t hesitate to point out that I’m forty-five. “You have a distinguished look. You are a normal, stable, reliable, not-crazy, not-sketchy human. I don’t have the time or patience to deal with drama queens.”

I laughed. “Okay… So you want old, boring women.”

Naomi smiled. “We are not old. We are seasoned.”

She also did not hesitate to say that she wanted to represent people with different looks.

“As in, I’m Black,” I said.

I was not offended by that. It’s a business strategy, not a social comment.

“I’m working on representing different looks. I dove into this idea based on people who were available. Now, I need to intentionally position it as a viable business.”

She answered my protest about not knowing how to model by sending me to South Padre Island where a woman named Ailana Geven is going to ease me into what a full-scale modeling experience is like. Tomorrow, I’ll be in a studio with people who are supposed to make it feel safe and easy, while leading me through each aspect of a photo shoot.

“Getting one nice picture isn’t that hard,” Naomi said. “Ailana will help you see how one shot leads to another and how to transition from one outfit to the next.”

So I, at almost 46, will be a new girl in the studio tomorrow. Strangely, I’m not nervous. At all.

Honestly, I feel like I’m doing a favor for a friend, so anything I accomplish will be fine.

GOOD NIGHT by Ailana Geven Keller

I’m standing here reviewing the summer. I had no idea how good it would feel to finally reach this day and see the judge’s decision come to pass.

Jason and I returned from our honeymoon and were still doing laundry when Emily came into our world. For all these weeks, we have assumed it would turn out like it did. Today, our belief became a reality.

In that same time, Naomi Prior has elevated AGI Creative into one of her company’s regular creative collaborators. She’s sent us work on a regular basis, and that’s going to happen again tomorrow.

She’s also using AGI to introduce new models to what a professional photo session looks like. She calls it modeling boot camp, and tomorrow, she’s sending two new models.

There’s another “also”…

Also, she has decided to develop a group of models in the Gen X and Millennial age groups. Her idea is to be able to show fashions on models in an age range she hasn’t represented in the past.

One of tomorrow’s boot camp models is part of that new plan. Danielle Whitaker is already here in SPI and will be modeling with us tomorrow.

After last week’s shoot, a few of you said you would have liked to see me modeling. I’ll be sure to share a few of my shots tomorrow.

So, today ends with the hearing in the past, learner licenses in the future, and a full day of modeling boot camp and photography tomorrow.

I’m looking forward to sharing it with you.

May the passing of the day lead you from where you are to places you may not have known existed, but where you are meant to be.

Good night.

Be your best you!

HEARING UPDATE by Ailana Geven Keller. Glad it all went as expected. No surprises, there. Emily's ask? My mind jumped there just for a second, then I dismissed it. She's 16. She is smarter than that. Learner licenses? Perfect sense. Great afternoon, you all.
