Chapter 3.1.56: BASEMENT DUTY by Hannah Madison

There are days when the routine isn’t quite so routine. Today is one of those. Right now, I’m heading to a small machine shop that wants to install a new CNC machining center.

The problem is that it’s heavy—heavy enough that nobody wants to trust assumptions about a building that has been standing for decades. Before the machine goes in, we need to know whether the basement columns, beams and footings can safely carry the additional load.

My part is the fieldwork and documentation. I’m measuring structural members, checking locations against the old drawings, photographing conditions and looking for corrosion, cracking, settlement or anything else that needs attention.

I’ll help with the preliminary load calculations, but a licensed professional engineer handling the structural review will verify the analysis and make the final determination. If we need material testing or reinforcement, we’ll bring in the appropriate testing firm or contractor.

Changing topics…

In the comments, there’s been some interest in how Shay and Devon are doing. I mentioned that they needed to check in and let you know what’s going on.

Shay balked, saying nothing interesting was happening. I reminded her of her long and detailed conversations with Eric Marten about traveling with Pay It Forward Society.
