MORNING WALK by Cindi Curtis Allen

Good morning, friends! Michael and I are at Fletcher Creek Greenway for an early walk, and we are officially on the part where we turn around and head back toward the car.

Which means showers are getting closer.

It’s been a good week. Work has stayed busy without becoming ridiculous, which is about the nicest thing I can say about a workweek. Yesterday I spent entirely too long tracking down a problem in some code that was producing the right numbers in the wrong place. I kept looking for something complicated, and naturally the answer turned out to be embarrassingly simple. I fixed it, tested it twice, and decided not to tell the computer how much of my morning it had stolen.

I’ve also been thinking about ways to make my home office a little greener.

One of the easiest things is simply turning off my monitors instead of letting them sit there glowing for hours. It saves electricity directly, but there’s another little benefit too: electronics produce heat. Every bit of heat added to the room is heat the air conditioner eventually has to remove. In a Memphis summer, I do not need to give the A/C any additional assignments.

I’m looking at a few other small changes too, and Michael and I plan to work on some of them this weekend. Nothing revolutionary. Just trying to be more deliberate about the resources we use.

That thought brought me once again to Psalm 24:1: “The earth is the Lord’s, and everything in it, the world, and all who live in it” (NIV).

I think stewardship becomes easier to understand when I remember that word: Lord’s.

The world is not mine to use carelessly simply because my individual choices seem small. My home, my time, my money, the electricity coming through the wall—even the trail Michael and I are enjoying this morning—are things I get to use for a while. Faithfulness can include taking reasonable care of them.

I won’t save the planet by turning off two monitors. But I can do the small thing that is mine to do. And if enough of us become a little more thoughtful about the small things entrusted to us, those choices stop being quite so small.

Now, Michael and I need to finish this walk and go find those showers.

Thanks for spending part of your morning with me.
