Chapter 3.1.70: WRAP UP by Merritt Gray

Good afternoon! Pay It Forward Society is in the Bronx this weekend, working with a local church to help fix up the homes of some elderly members who need a little help keeping up with things.

Nothing about the project is especially complicated. There’s peeling paint, weathered trim, loose boards and a collection of other jobs that are much easier when somebody younger and able-bodied shows up with a Saturday to spare.

There are eight of us on the Brooklyn team—plus Paul and Rebecca—and we gave two days to two families. We’re not going to finish everything. That was never really the expectation. People from the church are already lined up to continue after we leave, but we were able to make a pretty good start and take a lot of work off their list.

I think that’s where the larger point comes in.

The work itself is worthwhile. Two families are getting help they needed, and I’m glad we could do it. But Pay It Forward Society is also trying to increase awareness of needs like this.

Nick Fashola has told us that Pay It Forward is backed by a company with plenty of resources to spare. The hope is that what they invested this weekend here can be an example of what others can do elsewhere.

Because the truth is, there are elderly people, disabled people and families going through hard times in communities everywhere. Maybe they don’t need a whole house renovated. Maybe they need a fence repaired, a room painted, a yard cleaned up or a railing made safe.

If ten people here can spend a weekend helping two families, what happens if another group does the same thing in Queens? Or Iowa? Or Texas? Or wherever you happen to live?

That multiplication is the part I like.

So take a look around. Ask at your church, community group, neighborhood association or whatever organization you’re already connected with. Is there somebody who needs something that a handful of people could knock out in a weekend?

Maybe the answer is yes.

Anyway, Hannah and I stopped long enough for this picture, and now I’m pretty sure somebody is going to notice that I’m holding a hammer instead of using it.

Back to work.

Chapter 3.1.70: WRAP UP by Merritt Gray. Hi Merritt. Thanks for your post. You, Hannah, and the others did a great work there. It always takes an example effort to inspire others to follow up. So, I salute your example and the PIFS for arranging it. You know also, this kind of community service stands out on a professional resume. Just saying. Thanks for your post.
