I feel like Nen is like Naruto's chakra or just a general spirit energy type of system, the author just gives a little more detail to be used as a narrative device (similar to Naruto, where for example Rock Lee has no ninjutsu and thats a whole arc etc.). He integrates this system with the logic of the world, so your soul's intent bleeds into the real world through your Nen. It will be explained more later and more instances and examples will make it clear (like, "that dude has aura but it isn't purple and he said he doesnt want to kill anyone, wonder if thats related?") I think Nen is the coolest anime power system with how it develops, I think if anyone likes HxH they would like JJK and vice versa for that reason.
