My parent's used "favorite kid status" to their advantage. Literally pitted all of us against each other to achieve good behavior. "Oh, you want to be favorite kid? Then do your homework, get good grades, and find nice gifts for birthdays, Christmas, Mother's Day, and Father's Day."
