I've mentioned a few times in the youtube comments: Stranger Things makes me think of "Men Who Stare At Goats" because of the MK Ultra shit. "Men Who Stare At Goats" is very different in pretty much every way, but it's an interesting exploration of the MK Ultra program, of the thinking that led to it... it's a pretty Coen-esque movie, complete with George Clooney playing to type. Also Ewan McGregor in his best Jedi role, Jeff Bridges essentially reprises his role as The Dude... I really enjoyed it, it's entertaining, funny at times, interesting, and surprisingly uplifting.

Another film that had a plot involving "remote viewing" and MK Ultra experimentation is the 2004 serial killer manhunt thriller SUSPECT ZERO.

The arcade game the kids were playing early in the episode was "Dragon's Lair" which at the time was a highly innovative arcade game that showcased a classicly-drawn animated adventure in which the players moves are determined by the specific timing at the right moment to evade, fight and survive Dirk the Daring's quest to save Princess Daphne. It's an absolute classic. As someone who was born and raised in Kentucky, it irritated me when Steve referred to Kentucky Fried Chicken as KFC, since it wasn't called that until the 90's when the company decided to re-brand itself to appear more hip. As for the low level lighting in Hopper's cabin, it could be he and Eleven had that way to avoid attracting attention from passers-by in the Woods. Personally I like coming home at night after a long day of work to a home that isn't lit all up, for I find it very relaxing and calming.
