Jack the Narrator

As I'm sure you've picked up by now, this series is a nod to the sci-fi/horror films of the 1980's. While you haven't seen most of them, the most favored ones involve kids as the main characters, who end up saving the day. This particular episode with The Pollywog is clearly meant to be an homage to GREMLINS, how it starts off all cute and innocent with the creature and quickly gets out of hand through sheer naivete. They even use the music from GREMLINS in the sequence when Dart escapes into the school.
