I feel like you finally start to see the true genius of Toranaga in this episode. How he gives out just enough information to cause confusion or to get more information. Two examples would be Toranaga not allowing the black ship to sail because there are secret bases all around. The Catholics now know Toranaga knows about secret bases but not which ones or where they are. The other example was when he had John sleep in his quarters to see if someone was going to try and assassinate John. With that simple move he learned who really wants John dead. I think the expression you were looking for in English about the looks Torinaga was exchanging with Ochiba-no-kata would be the 'side eye'. It not a look of love or lust but a look of distrust. The Japanese, along with other Asian cultures, will add a suffix to a name to denote positions of power. Marika telling John to address her as 'Marikasama' is her making sure John address her properly. We have instance of this in Canada with respect to our government. Members of parliament are addressed as 'Honorable ' for example but the Prime Minister is referred to as 'The Right honorable '. Sun Tzu wrote, in The Art of War, 'The greatest victory is that which requires no battle'
