YES! I love this show so much!

Garth Hill

hahaha, i can't help but wonder if Mary uses this thumbnail expression in the law offices (or courtroom?) very much! maybe when the judge says the equivalent of OVERRULED ...?!?

Garth Hill

oh no! hahaha ... that is the way the world turns, for sure. hang in there. =)

I was wondering if I had the wrong episode and then finally realized your video had the "previously on" part while where I was watching jumped straight into it. I think the episode 5 starts at the 1:47 mark in the video. The Rocinante gets her name... which was also the name of Don Quixote's horse. I think it actually means former or broken-down horse. I am loving my return to this excellent show and I am so happy that you are enjoying it so much.

Yeah, as I understand it, Rocinante is a somewhat pejorative term, used somewhat ironically in Cervantes' novel. The Wikipedia article about this (and I know Wikipedia is not necessarily the best source for factual information, but it's all I've got handy) refers to the name Rocinante actually being a "complex pun," something of which apparently Cervantes was fond. It sort of suggests, according to the wiki, that a broken down, old horse has been repurposed for something noble but perhaps a bit beyond its capabilities. I don't know, perhaps a native Spanish speaker could chime in here and educate us a bit on this subject. I will say, though, that I appreciated Mary's questioning that someone would call their daughter "workhorse." I've seen quite a few reactions to this series, and I think Mary might be the first I've seen question that line where Amos claims he once knew "lady named Rocinante." That line always struck me as odd as well; I kind of cringe a little every time I see this episode. This show is so amazingly well written that these kinds of dubious choices in the writing stand out for me more than they probably would in other shows. Thankfully, there are mercifully few of them. But I agree, it is pretty unlikely that anyone who loved their daughter would name her Rocinante. I mean, I guess it could be a nickname she acquired later in life, but if so, it would not have been a compliment, so Amos fondly remembering a lady named Rocinante seems a little ... odd. But it's a small misstep in an otherwise great episode.

I am thinking a nickname like that started as an insult that the woman then owned, taking the power away from the bully.

I can absolutely see a woman in Amos’ past being called Rocinante. Though, probably a nickname. IYKYK.

I’m so happy you are loving this show so much, Mary. With how much you loved The Martian and Apollo 13, I thought you’d really enjoy this series. Speaking of which, did you know that The Martian and The Expanse exist in the same universe? The writers met at a convention and came to mutual agreement that they existed in the same universe. There’s even a ship named the Mark Watney in the Expanse books (though it doesn’t appear in the show).

I'm so glad you're enjoying this show so far, i think its a pretty great show and probably because its an even better book series. People that get to the end of the show often say the later seasons are even better than the early ones.

I've seen this season at least 7 times now and I still catch new things. The fact that Miller is drinking coffee and refuses a drink from Dawes finally just now registered on me. That he is being serious about something and has stopped fucking around.
