It's quite an ingenious coping mechanism. From his perspective, he wakes up, drives to work and then immediately comes back home, and after 4-5 hours, falls asleep again. He's probably only conscious and aware for 1/3 of the weekday, during most of which he's self-medicating on booze. I don't think it's truly benevolent to his long term health, but it's a hell of a way to check-out of one's daily life.
