Ashford's arc is interesting because he keeps having these deep conversations with other people where he advocates for an "important truth" that the people he's speaking with interpret exactly opposite from what he intended. Earlier in the season, he had that big talk with Naomi about not letting nostalgia trick you. He was trying to suggest that Naomi shouldn't allow nostalgia to fool her into missing the Rocinante and its crew, but instead, the lesson she took was that it was a mistake to be tricked by nostalgia into missing Beltaloda and the Belter life, which is what led her to join the crew of the Behemoth. Ashford was trying to convince her to stay, but ended up encouraging her to leave. Nostalgia is in the eye of the beholder, I guess. Then in this episode, Melba/Clarissa asks him if doing one good thing at the end of your life can make up for all the bad stuff you've done in the past. What she means is, if I help Holden and crew to save the system, will it make up for the time I spent trying to kill him? But what Ashford hears is affirmation of his own plan to "save" the system as a way to atone for years of piracy. Heroism, also, is in the eye of the beholder. Season 4 (as you may have already seen) represents a tonal and thematic shift in the series, a step away from a story of epic scope in exchange for a story of smaller scope but still epic implications. It also slows down the pace a little. Some people found those changes jarring and disliked Season 4 (a bit) for that reason. But I actually appreciated the change of pace, plus I think Season 4 has some of the best written character interactions in the show, hands down. It'll be interesting to see what you think of it. Looking forward to it!

It's funny because when I think of Season 4 I immediately just think of "Ilus" but in reality there were other story threads in that season which really enriched it.
