Me: Man, I'm home from work today and I have nothing to watch. Mary: I got you, here's two hours of The Wire. Fantastic way to spend a Thursday afternoon.

Over the last few episodes we've gotten to know some characters more deeply, and first impressions are starting to fall away: McNulty (or McNutty, as Bubbs likes to call him) is presented to us as the protagonist here, and as we stick close by him, we begin to see the negative effect his obsessions have on all of those around him. On his kids, on Ray Cole, on his marriage, even on Rhonda. Bunk (no angel himself) points this out: "You're no good for people, Jimmy." We discovered that Lester Freeman is not the "hump" that he was made out to be. And now we can see that puzzle-master Prez, though no angel, is becoming a valuable asset to the detail (just don't allow him out on the street in any official capacity with his gun). Bubbles gets a glimpse of light at the 12-step meeting courtesy of Walon, a recovering addict with a gift for telling it like it is. Walon is played by Steve Earle, well-known country guitarist and band leader, and a recovering addict himself. Stringer clearly has more to him than we've witnessed thus far, recognizing that Avon is underestimating Omar by merely putting a bounty on his head -- This parallels the way the Baltimore Police have been underestimating the Barksdales all this time, btw -- and that a more strategic approach is called for. Omar is a fascinating character, a player of The Game with his own separate code. Though his vendetta against Barksdale is for the torture/murder of Brandon is ultimate reason he is helping McNulty and Kima, it also happens to satisfy his own rule against the killing of "civilians" not involved in The Game (in this case, the murder of Gant in episode 1).
