I love that you've seen From the Earth To The Moon. The episode that Matt Craven was in is my favorite in the whole series, because I'm a test technician and my job is basically breaking things that engineers try to make. So that whole sequence where they're trying to get the LEM ready to fly (but All Of The Things go wrong) just hit home for me. Side note- he wasn't in these two episodes of Pacific, but the actor that plays Dr. Sledge (Eugene's dad) is the same guy that played Jim McDivitt in that episode of FTETTM. But Wait There's More™: Sorry, I had planned on mentioning this part but forgot about it by the time I was done blathering about FTETTM. You were asking why Leckie would wanna leave the comfort and safety of the hospital to go back to his unit before they ship out to somewhere else. A common thing with soldiers in WW2 was wanting to get back to their "home unit". The guys they had trained with, lived with, fought with, etc. It was about familiarity and being around friends that you know and trust. A lot of soldiers/Marines that spent long periods of time in hospitals would just get randomly assigned to some vaguely-similar unit where they didn't know anyone, and apparently most guys would avoid that like the plague. You see it a little bit in Band of Brothers, where Popeye Wynn goes AWOL from the hospital before he's healed up because he knows Easy Company is about to jump and he doesn't wanna miss it. The show doesn't go into detail about Bill Guarnere, but he broke his leg in Holland and was so desperate to get back to Easy that he painted the cast black to make it look like a boot and "walked" out of the hospital.
