Lightning crackled along the cells, each filled with swelling brood or Biomass undergoing the transformation to sweet nectar. Tucked into a corner along the roof, nestled between natural folds in the stone, the hive location was well concealed, with only a narrow entrance on either end. A defensible enough location for now, but without much room for expansion. The Queen was already on the lookout for another location in which to build a larger nest.

Workers, the first of her children in this new stratum, moved amongst the cells, ensuring the developing brood were tended and fed, ensuring the transition from Biomass to nourishing nectar was completed smoothly. There were other jobs for them as well. They were the ones responsible for construction now that they were old enough, using their own saliva and processed Biomass to expand the hive.

Since the Queen no longer needed to tend to the nest as actively, she had more time for hunting.

Despite heavily modifying the status of her children during her last evolution, the Queen wasn’t confident they were yet strong enough to compete in this new environment. Loyal and faithful, they yearned to fight for the hive, but she wouldn’t allow them to, not yet. She needed to hunt for them more, bring back prey to give them levels and let them accumulate mutations.

When they were more numerous and stronger, they would be able to take over the hunting duties, giving her more time in the nest, but for now, she spent far more time out of the nest than she did inside of it. Her children were growing increasingly annoying about it.

“My Queen!” buzzed one of her firstborn, Elizabee. “You should not leave the hive alone! Allow me to accompany you!”

Her pheromones were filled with anxious care for her mother, which was nice, but only served to catch the attention of her sisters, which wasn’t.

“Is the Queen going out again?” Beeatrice asked. “Alone? Absolutely not!”

“I am not required to take you with me,” the Queen told her firmly, “you are too weak to leave the nest. Stay here and tend to the brood until I return.”

“I must protest and protest I shall!” Guinebee declared. “I have reached the third tier and my stinger is fully mutated. The monsters out there stand no chance against my mighty toxin!”

Irritated, the Queen buzzed her wings in frustration, blowing back the much smaller workers. “The monsters out there would destroy you in an instant,” she said, her pheromones flat and unamused. “None of you are leaving this hive until you reach the fourth tier. Now stop being pests, I have to hunt.”

“Boo!”

“Hiss!”

“Meany!”

Paying no attention to her protesting children, the Queen flew quickly out of the exit and out into the Dungeon. Lightning and wind immediately buffeted her, but she absorbed the blows and moved with the air current, her legs tucked tightly underneath her carapace as she began to search for new prey.

It had seemed like such a good idea at first. If her children were more intelligent, then they would be better able to navigate the difficult hunting conditions here, so much deeper in the Dungeon than where the Queen was born, and where her first hive failed.

So, she made them smarter, modifying her egg-laying process heavily during her last evolution to create smarter, stronger, more adaptable workers. What she hadn’t appreciated at the time was just how independently minded it would make them. In her first hive, the very thought that any of her children would ever second guess a single thing that she had told them was absurd! Now it was a daily occurrence!

Which only compounded the second decision she had made. After all, they had pheromone glands already, from the moment they were born, why not make it so they could communicate better? This would mean more cooperation, more efficient tending to the hive and hunting.

So far it had only led to more coordinated protesting.

Antennae blowing wildly in the strong winds, the Queen was still able to detect a faint scent. It wasn’t much, but it was something she had found before.

Banking hard, she turned into the wind and let it blow her to the side, angling her massive body to ensure she moved in just the right way. Suddenly, her wings buzzed once more, louder than before and she picked up speed.

From somewhere nearby within the swirling cloud on her right came a surprised cry followed by powerful wing beats. Monsters in this area were growing to know and fear the droning sound of her wings, the Queen had noticed, but this one was too slow.

She may not be nearly as fast as they were once they picked up speed, but she could dart in and tackle them before they had a chance to flee, agile and quick thanks to the unique nature of her wings.

With a loud crack she smashed into the target, spraying feathers wide as she latched on, mandibles snapping. Talons slashed, beak stabbed and lightning crashed. The fight was on.

When it was over, the Queen struggled back to the nest. Injured and burdened by the Crackling Hawk she had defeated, it was a difficult flight, but failure was simply not an option. The hive had to flourish, no matter what.

“The Queen returns!”

“Ah! She’s injured!”

“Prepare the medical nectar immediately!"

“I’m fine,” the Queen groused, finally coming to a rest, lowering the Biomass down into the nest. She appeared grumpy, but on the inside couldn’t help but feel warmed by the care of her children. “I wasn’t able to keep it alive, I’m afraid. I’m sorry.”

“Don’t you dare apologise!” Elizabee yelled, waving her forelegs in the air. “You have done everything for us and we are truly grateful!”

“Hear, hear!”

“Three cheers for the Queen!”

Well, maybe having noisy children wasn’t too bad.

Oh fuck they have Bee names. I love them. The colony has to make friends with the bees!!

TheCrassDragon

Awww I really hope they make friends with The Colony!

Touch

Pretty sure they gonna be friends…I hope

strainge guy1

I wonder how the colony and the hive will interact. Usually two insect species would fight but given their intelligence they may bee allies?

Arnold Grobler

Helll yeah Fingers crossed that these bees are allies and not enemies

TheLostGolem

OMG.... they are definitely going to be allies with the colony....

TheCrassDragon

Bees and Ants don't come into contact super often I don't think, so I'm hoping there's no innate animosity like with the termites and they become friends!

JulianP

Bee friends?!

John H

Bee mom! Will she be an ally or enemy?! Hopefully ally!

Miguel Angel

They would get along really well, wouldnt they?

John Pratt

Oh shit, they're adorable. No harm must befall them, it's time to build the Insect Coalition.

UNKNOWN

I hope they beecome staunch allies of the colony.

Xksi

Hope they are allies, although knowing anthony, he will piss them off accidentally and make them enemies, just to become allies when the Legion arrives and try to take them all out

Theweird12345

I really. REALLY hope that the sludge doesn’t come down on them. And is the bee queen a human? She seems too intelligent to a normal monster, modifying the process to create smarter children isn’t something most monsters would think of

Zzyxus

This is simply beeutiful.

Gabus Deux

Yall remember how gandalf mentioned a loooong time ago (i think) that the dungeon takes note of what works and what doesnt, then copies that more and more? Yeah i think the colony single handedly got its attention

UNKNOWN

Beefriend them!

TheLostGolem

I think bees and ants dislike each other in nature. That being said, the colony strives to make friends with sapient species, and Anthony and the Bee queen are both from Earth, so I can absolutely see a world where Anthony meets the queen, makes friends with her, and then the bees and ants get along. I can just imagine the Ants and bees starting off kind of hesitant around each other. Then one of the bees makes a complaint about how their queen is always going off and fighting on her own. The ants are just like "You all have that issue too?!?!" And then hitting things off from there. A beecadamy starts up. A bee team for tunnel ball. It's going to bee amazing.

Shaitan

Fingers crossed for alliance! They sound so fun! Side note, I love the idea of the first queens becoming best friends.

TheLostGolem

Yes! 100% agreed! The ants have so much infrastructure for raising young insects! And they aren't even disgusting like termites! They'll be best friends!

Draynar

She said they aren't even t4 yet. If they're not allies they're only lasting 2 chapters.

John H

If Gandalf didn’t want bees to be friends, why’d he make them in friend shape?

TheLostGolem

Ooh! The bees need a better nest built! If only there was a friendly race of other insects that were highly proficient in excavation and construction...

David Harshman

Interesting convergent evolution. Both the Hive and Colony insist on Fourth Tier before being fully active members of the society. And, both went for pheromonal communication rather than alternatives.

TheLostGolem

The bee queen is on a similar level to Anthony, so they have that going for them.

Tommy Gallery

I'm sure there will be a bit of fight8ng, but I'm think8ng they team up to kill Uncle Theo, amd that's opens the door for 2 new Ancients.

LuffyBR

This bee queen sure is strong asf? Like, IIRC, she has the Call, hasn't she? She was among the two monsters Theo told the Krath about, the other being Anthony. Then, I remember it was already stated the Mother Tree lost the Call after she created the Bruan'chi, because the ancients judged she had lost her potential after wasting the absurd amount of evolution energy she wasted to make their birth possible. Like, the Bruan'chi have that "soul/spirit" thing that probably was way more expensive than the modifications Anthony did on his mother and this bee did on herself? I dunno, just a guess. But if she really was the monster that had the Call and she still has it... that means the ancients judged her different from the Mother Tree? Why? So curious....

Sly Trickster

Maybee, maybee not, time will tell

Sulhythal

*Bee Dungeon noises*

Igor Chmurski

Oh, so it was a bee after all, not wasp

Moonspike

Well looks like my assumption has been thoroughly disproven.

Aeseof

...I love this. I very much hope they will be good friends. And honestly... If the ants loved sugar in their tea, imagine how much they'll love having HONEY! ❣️

Aeseof

It occurs to me... Honey is an excellent additive for tea.

alt31415

Bees! Bee puns! I hope there'll be peace with the ants. I know ants are usually marauders, but... bees! Bee puns!

andwhyisit

Monsters can develop intelligence (in the form of the cunning stat) as they evolve. The Colony's queen was an example of this. I'd expect that the queen evolution route comes with cunning stat bonuses, since they need to survive until their nest/colony is formed. Regardless... any monster that made it through the 5th (along with any number of other strata) to reach the 6th will've formed an understanding of the value of the cunning stat.

guvvuf

Hopefully new friends!

Scott Faulkner

Bellisaar vs Anthony what if chapter when

eryos

The queen bee looks like she would be a good friend to The Queen.

Scott Faulkner

Alright time for the confusing of the century. In this corner we have the immaculate wave of industry that is the Formica Sapiens lead by their orbiting elder ANTHONY. In the red corner the up and coming queen of sparks that just found the joy of talking to others the (other) QUEEN.

Alright Illmakeone

Ants will typically raid bee hives for honey. It's not as intricate as their relationship with termites but it's a lot more common than termite wars in my neck of the woods.

Alright Illmakeone

We're probably talking about entirely different magnitudes of evolutionary energy usage. The mother tree used it to make almost-immortal and more importantly non-monster offspring. On the other hand, this queen is already a colony type monster and her offspring so far appear to only have the cunning + pheromone gland combo for sapience.

Reader-13

Has this character appeared in story aside from the chapter we got of them entering the 6th stratum

Ether's Blessed One

I have a feeling that THE QUEEN and the Queen Bee will make good friends. Especially regarding their children's antics.

Greyg

Greedy wish side story of just the Bees dungeon life gonna bee sad if enemies

LuffyBR

Yeah, I know about it. That being said, she is now, what? a T8 monster? My point is that I was (still am) pretty sure that by this point onwards the Ancients would abandon any monster who forsake power, no matter the reason, as the probability of such monster reaching higher grades and progress would be extremely small.

Greyg

No it’s just the two chapters the bee queen and Anthony both have the ancient call pulling them deeper so she was mentioned to the krath, as a target by the ancient they worship, but no details were given

Reader-13

Oh yeahhhhh, thank you!

Greyg

Tree also used/divided its soul to make the braunchi i believe even more investment

Greyg

Colony still stuck on the fifth till the hearts are conquered and more cleansing has been done. Queen bee could establish multiple hives multiple queens before ants establish themselves on the 6th. The ants can walk on the rock ceiling, but flying benefits the bees

C Gillan

Oh gods help us. It a bee version of THE queen but with Anthony's naming sense. Hopefully anthony doesn't follow the trope of falling for girls that are like his mother.😂

Paul Kowalski

These definitely feel like wasps or hornets! The mention of turning biomass into nectar is a cool touch—it reminds me of how real wasp larvae secrete sugary liquid for the adults, which is a neat fantasy twist. Since ants are basically evolutionary descendants of wasps that lost their wings, they're distant cousins! Still, knowing how fiercely even same-species ant colonies fight over resources, an alliance would be quite a surprise. Maybe we’ll see wasp riders or a new winged champion soon?

Greyg

Bees did you not notice the bee puns

Rahsheem Reid

I wouldn’t be surprised if the legion finds them first.

TheLostGolem

Well... regular ants also steal sugar, which is something abhorrent to monster Ants. Honestly, I could totally see a really good partnership forming.

TheLostGolem

I don't see them setting up that quickly though? The colony expanded rapidly due to Anthony innovating things like farms and other stuff. He also diversified the colony into a caste system for different roles. The bees are intelligent, but they currently lack the diversification of skill sets that would really let them thrive. Also, those hearts are going to fall incredibly rapidly, so the most I can see happening is the Bees get one really big colony going before Anthony runs into them. Also, it's going to be incredibly funny when Anthony rolls up to find out the Bees can talk, since they also have the evolved pheromone glands.

TheLostGolem

Rinoz gave the bees names! Who gives the bees names without making them friends?

Phil Ritter

In the wild ants and bees are no enemies and if they are in case of army ants and the like it’s very onesided with the bees/ wasps just abandoning their brood and nest once the ants start to swarm in

Phil Ritter

As most predict I do think they are future allies. For one they are way too small a hive to compete with the colony. They are smart so communication isn’t an issue. Both species wouldn’t hate each other on earth and rarity interact. They compliment each other pretty well with one being dominant on the earth and the other in the sky. Also they are getting cute names it would just be cruel for Rino to force Antony to fight them. Also I just looked it up but having multiple queens in a hive is very rare so likely their expansion is limited at least for the new future or unless she plans to create multiple independent hives

Yami

BEEES!

Yami

The bee queen isn't from earth? She is normal monster spawn

Greyg

Higher tier monsters on the 6th provide better biomass to low tier brood so fast growth

TheLostGolem

I thought she was? Give me a minute. Going to find that one chapter she was first introduced in now.

TheLostGolem

It's chapter 1747. You're right @Yami. It doesn't say anything about the queen bee being from Earth. Idk why I thought that.

Greyg

2 reincarnated souls, as gandalf said previously he gives broken people another chance at life most die early, but they add variety to the system both colony insects both prioritized intelligence but with many other differences. Convergent evolution the success of intelligent insects could lead to wild insect monsters with higher mental stats, but without a reincarnated mind behind it they would still be just slightly smart monsters even a smart centipede is still just a dumb centipede

Greyg

6th strata biomass and experience will make growth faster the colony was stuck with weak monsters. Monsters will not inherently follow all the pre existing limitations of earth or our point of reference so multiple queens is possible even organs and body composition doesn’t have to follow set limits of bees could mix in wasp features or others either through evolution or queens choices. The queen has lightning elements built in that seemed to be applied to the hive itself possibly the other members have inherited element the very first line lightning cracked between the cells

TheLostGolem

That's a very good point. Atm, only the queen is hunting though? So the evolution speed is going to be pretty slow. It will ramp up quickly though as more bees gain hunting capabilities.

alt31415

You mean they're gonna 'bee' friends?

Koala Man

There could bee the beeginings of beecoming a bee ant cavalry

Pordgy

Yes, yes, a thousant times yes. Anthony better bee on his best beehaviour with this one

Pordgy

They can trade aphid honey!

Yami

Queen monsters (like for example the first ant queen) can get stronger through their hive

Brian Schwab

OMG Noooo! Why did you have to mention a smart centipede!!! Now you have given Rinoz the horrific idea to make that happen!!!! Don’t mention any other evil smart insects either for all our sakes!!!

Brian Schwab

But he is also technically a girl, all the ants are.

Pockman

What Tier is she, I wonder? She’s at the very least T7 to be a threat here, possibly T8 after her evolution? This Strata would comfortably sustain up to T9 (Comfortable Tier = Strata + 3)

UNKNOWN

Some would say that's the best part.

UNKNOWN

They would go absolutely bananas

UNKNOWN

Shhhhh, you'll give RinoZ ideas.

Greyg

It’s a reincarnated soul we have multiple examples of souls from earth, as monsters most if not all the ancients are reincarnations. Anthony is a reincarnation the bee queen is likely so too. The conversations with gandalf make it obvious he/it does this often

TheLostGolem

Smart Termites... I shudder at the thought. Clearly they would have evil intelligent thoughts though, so their annihilation is still totally justified.

Alan Lint

Got the Legion is going to lose their shit if these Bees and the Colony form an alliance and the Colony help them establish themselves in the third and fourth layers. Give the ants air support.

jeffrey niski

Need bee friends for the colony. Plus the colony can protect them from the other races because you just know the legion is going to want to stamp them out.

Jeremy Looper

I will riot if the colony and the bees fight. I like ants but bees are the best. There so cute with their bee names 😭

Paul Kowalski

Fair point on the names! As a non-native speaker, I often read with a translator to catch all the nuances, and I guess those 'bee-utiful' puns flew right over my head this time. I was so laser-focused on the biology—hunting and devouring monsters is such peak wasp energy that my brain just completely ignored the branding. I guess I was too busy doing 'evolution math' to notice the wordplay! 😅

יותם רוזנטל

YESSSSSSSSSS THATS WHAT IM TALKING ABOUTTTTTTTT Please for the love of god make her fall in love with Anthony and do a comedy routine like luffy and Hancock

UNKNOWN

*Flight of the Bumblebee starts playing in the background*

Alan Lint

LOL that be amazing. I'm just imagining the Bees using the Legion as kinetic bombs then shock troops cause no way that does any of them in.

alt31415

Going to bee allies, indeed.

Yeslek Nnamhctits

I hope they can bee allies... but they tend towards territorial on both sides.. :(

andwhyisit

The Hive makes me realise that one of the keys to the success of the Colony has been them owning territory on every stratum they have come across, as well as the surface. It creates a massive pipeline for advancement for every member of the Colony. The Colony can fight monsters unaided from tier 2 onwards, the Hive has to be spoon-fed almost dead monsters by the rest of the colony until they hit tier 4, after which their advancement would be stalled by having to provide for the lower-tiered members of the Hive. That is a massive deficit. Not to mention that the Colony also became a powerful nation by building upon the knowledge of the other races, as well as engaging in trade and diplomacy. Being stationed in the sixth, the Hive is also locked away from any potential in this regard, with one exception: the Colony. The honey these bees can produce would be something the Colony would be willing to trade for.

andwhyisit

I just realised that I wrote all of that without a single bee pun. I'm sorry everyone, I've failed you all.

Greyg

They’re monsters first so through evolution or the queens choices they could have wasp inspired features or organs or other unique things. Electric element, a stinger on the abdomen, and bee wings seems to be the only details we don’t have a status sheet for example the bee puns following the ants example make it relatively clear bee friends are the hope

Greyg

Beenanas

Gonvas

A monster that managed to transverse the 5th while being hunted by the Krath. That monster also has reproduction build. I'd say she's a T9.

Greyg

Smart spiders with interconnected webs that form an interNET

alt31415

Nah, I think she's a high-level T8 like Anthony is, and likely the second Ancient Candidate Theorazzn mentioned to the Krath.

Ruwa

They must end up friends with the colony. Imagine the possibilities, endless honey, a combined force, the training grounds but for bees :3

Ashrothe

No One Expects the Insect Alliance!!!!

Ryan Williams

I swear to god if there’s not an alliance with the bee friends!!!

Dennis Hornsby

I thought this was the termite queen that escaped but I guess we dont get to see her yet unless the termite queen evolved herself into a bee

Hayden Leech

Penelopbee! Persephobee! Serabeena! (Seraphina) CassioBeea! (Cassiopeia) EmilBee! (Emily) AverBee? (Avery) ZoBee! (Zoey) NaomBee! (Naomi) ❤️🥰❤️

andwhyisit

No. The Colony allows its members to fight while supervised upon reaching tier 2. Tier 1 is them being delivered almost dead monsters. The Hive gives its members the same treatment as tier 1 Colony members until they hit tier 4. With the Colony tier 4 is the minimum to be considered not in training (though I think that number was migrating to tier 5 iirc). Colony members can still fight while in training. The difference here is that the Hive only has access to the sixth, so they need to be tier 4 to fight even the weakest monster on this stratum.

Silent Consent

Well I think some of them are referred to as male sometimes, the only one I recall is Victor I think but it could have been my imagination or a typo. Obviously the ants don’t have genitals including Anthony so they can identify however they want to just like they could if they did have them. I super doubt Anthony is going to have a romantic interest in anyone, but he absolutely should! Nothing is stopping him from making any additions to himself next evolution or even performing core surgery on himself maybe.

Nebarick

I think we have found Anthony’s Beeloved! :3

Yaru

Following Anthony's playbook. They better be allies. Screw the Legion and what they think. Having a beeforce would be perfect

Jules Deathwish

I dunno, the colony might be a bit antagonistic.
