Tyron stepped through the main gate of Kallas, enshrouded by the thick cloud of miasma that still belched from the miasma foundries behind him. He didn’t feel any sense of triumph; he hadn’t achieved what he had set out to do. This was merely one stop along the still-long road to vengeance. The Southern Province was far from conquered, but at least a few Houses had lost their private armies.

Through the conduits, his mind was filled with the ongoing conflict, now spreading through the streets as skeletons descended from the walls to hunt down the last of the defenders. Very quickly, the situation was growing messy. There hadn’t been nearly enough time for the population of the city to empty out the west gate, and now terrified citizens flooded everywhere, running through the streets, screaming in terror as they saw the undead marching towards them.

It was inevitable that innocents would be caught up in the fighting. Spells and powerful skills were being exchanged across cobbled roads, inside buildings, through market squares. Detonations, Bone Lances, shards of stone flying through the air to pierce flesh and shatter limbs. By far, the safest place to be was inside their homes, but how could he tell them that? It’s not as if they would listen if he told them, so all he could do was leave those inside alone as much as possible and hope everyone got the message.

He’d done what he could for the regular people of Kallas, he simply didn’t have time or energy to spend on them any further.

“We’re going to lose over ten thousand skeletons in this assault.”

The voice was flat, unemotional, despite the turmoil he could sense within the soul of the speaker. So much hatred, anger and sorrow within, and no way to direct it to the one deserving of those emotions.

“That’s less than you expected,” Tyron remarked to General Crow.

No longer a member of the Golden Legion, the general was now a wight, his features painted in ghostly green spirit-flesh, though they had made him continue to wear his old armour. Perhaps half in respect and half in mockery.

“It’s far higher than it needed to be.”

“We didn’t have time to be subtle,” Tyron said. “You’ve done well.”

He wasn’t sure why he bothered to praise the man. Crow didn’t want to do well, didn’t want to help Tyron achieve his vengeance, kill the people of the Empire and spill the divine blood of the Nobility. Twisted, filled with horror, rage and pain, he served because Tyron had bound him in unbreakable chains, lashing his soul to his corpse and winding commands around his mind.

Still, it felt unnecessarily impolite not to mention he’d done a good job when he had. With General Crow handling the overall disposition of the troops, the numberless mistakes that Tyron would have made were nowhere to be seen. With a single mind able to reach out and direct the wights, Tyron’s horde moved as smoothly as pieces on a game board, everything in the right place at the right time.

All he needed was for Crow to receive more levels and hopefully ascend to Gold. At least he could gain experience by commanding undead in battle, which meant Tyron didn’t need to send him out to fight directly.

After struggling with himself, General Crow could only reply with a nod, unable to offer any words.

Tyron stepped to the side as the cavalry rode into the city under the command of Janus the wight. Largely useless when assaulting the walls, they would prove their worth fighting in the streets, according to the general at least.

More and more of the horde continued to file through the gate, including the miasma foundries, which he now powered down. Despite the fighting not lasting for long, an enormous amount of magick had been consumed. The Grave Moons remained in place, however, as they would continue to filter energy down to the horde, so it was worth continuing to maintain them.

However, he would need to shut them off fairly soon. Beneath the three Grave Moons, the environment would eventually become something similar to what he had experienced in the Realm of the Dead, absolutely suffocated with Death energy to the point it became inimical to life.

He himself would be able to endure, but the inhabitants of the city? Not so much.

Remaining within the heart of the horde, Tyron continued to move deeper into Kallas as his undead fought and drove the defenders back towards the eastern gate. He saw, through the watchful eyes of his ghosts, that people continued to flood through that opening in the wall, fleeing down the river road as fast as they could.

Given enough time, the city would empty itself, but he couldn’t afford to wait that long.

It took several hours of brutal street fighting before Tyron finally reached his destination. In the grand market square before the gates to the Kallas city palace, the Necromancer gathered with his core troops. Still, the gates were locked, a handful of terrified Soldiers on the walls.

Deep in his chest, he felt a rising heat as the fire of his rage kindled into flame.

If he was going to find any members of the Nobility within Kallas, it was going to be here. At his command, the square was swept clean, the entrances bared, the stalls removed to create a broad, empty space, nothing but a fountain in the centre, dedicated to the glory of House Ladisla.

Tyron raised his hands, and began to speak.

It was the first time he had cast magick himself since the siege had begun. There was no need for him to intervene personally up to this point; anything he’d needed to do, he could do through the demi-liches without having to open his own mouth.

Indeed, he didn’t need to perform this ritual himself either, but he chose to. Perhaps he had simply grown bored not doing what he most enjoyed.

When the first of the Words of Power slammed into the air, it was as if all sound had been sucked out of the city. No air remained, there was no space for any sound except the syllables that rolled from his tongue and beat into the fabric of reality as though it were a drum.

With precision, his hands flickered from one sigil to the next, almost faster than the human eye could track as he continued to speak, bending and warping his power to the desired shape, working through the intricate magick he had designed after days of solid effort. He’d needed something to do while waiting for the horde to cross the desert.

Magick thundered through him as he gave it purpose through the sigils of his hands and the words from his mouth, weaving, crafting and constructing what was, to the eyes of most Mages, a flawless work of art.

To his own, it was barely passable and needed a lot of fixing.

All throughout the city, the people of Kallas huddled, unable to understand what was happening as reality bent and warped around them, unable to speak or cry out, unable to hear anything at all but that inevitable voice.

A dark cloud of purple and green energy materialised before Tyron, expanding as he poured more and more power into it until it was equal in size to the gate itself.

It wasn’t necessary to use a gesture to unleash a spell; indeed, his mother had greatly frowned upon the practice, labelling it as ‘a crutch for the incompetent and feeble-minded’. But then, she had been a Battle Mage, casting her spells in the thick of the fighting. She’d needed her hands to defend herself.

A slight gesture was surely permissible.

Tyron brought the ritual to a close, raised his hand, and in the slightest of motions, pushed it forward.

From the cloud of energy, a Death's Head emerged, then rocketed forward. Tyron couldn’t see the effect of his spell, not directly, but the ear-splitting screech of twisting metal and the earth-shaking roar of shattering stone, followed by the cloud of dust and debris that soon filled the air, told the story well enough.

He stood patiently as his demi-lich minions shielded him from harm, and once the dust had cleared, he saw the gate, standing proud and tall not a moment ago, twisted and bent, hanging off its enormous hinges.

“Reasonable,” he murmured to himself, “though probably not efficient.”

For the same amount of power, he probably could have destroyed a gate twice that size, if he used it better. For a rough attempt, it wasn’t too bad.

“You’re never satisfied are you?” Filetta said from beside him. “Didn’t you just knock down that gate in spectacular fashion?”

“I wouldn’t say spectacular,” he replied, frowning. “It was fine.”

“Fine?” she rolled her ethereal eyes. “The gate is down, isn’t it?”

“Sure, it was effective, but that’s just one measure of a spell.”

The undead began to pile into the palace grounds, sweeping aside the feeble resistance remaining around the gate as they entered.

“Well, it seemed reasonable enough to me. If I could knock down an enchanted gate by speaking at it, I’d be pretty satisfied.”

“I’m not just speaking at it,” he retorted. “It’s a lot more involved than that. Shouldn’t you be going in there and killing people?” he demanded, pointing towards the palace.

Filetta smiled.

“If you ask me like that, how can I refuse?”

She danced away, blowing him a kiss before drawing her wicked twin daggers and slipping inside the walls amongst the regular skeletons.

Tyron sighed, then raised his hands again. After a moment, he thought better of it, lowering them back down. Although he hadn’t expected it to be a problem, the effect of his casting on the people still trapped in the city was probably a bit… overwhelming.

Low levelled and with meagre blessings from the Unseen, most common folk simply weren’t built to withstand that sort of thing. He should probably cast through a demi-lich.

It didn’t take long to conjure the Ossuary, the skeletal arch and ominous door set in the centre materialising within the square. Immediately, the door swung open and the workforce from Granin emerged, looking around themselves in disbelief.

“Going to be a busy day,” he said without a change of expression. “I’ll have them start coming over. Did Richard and Briss come?”

“We did, Master,” Richard said hastily, stepping through the door, Briss on his heels.

“Good,” Tyron nodded to them. “Wait here and help the others. I’ll be back soon.”

Not waiting for a reply, he turned and strode into the palace, the fire in his chest rising to a roaring flame.

There were nobles in here. He was sure of it.

He wasn’t aware of the grin that slowly overtook his features.

Buck

He does so love killing the nobles and who could blame him?

christian montgomery

Finally, one of his original spells on display!! I didn’t expect it to have so much power behind it, but it does make sense. I wonder what the perfected (at least, what Tyron would see as close enough to perfect) version of it will look like.

Theweird12345

Ahh every moment where Tyron acts human and with some emotion feels me with joy! Plenty of examples in this chapter. Truly peaceful Whelp, time to murder children now!

bitch

Yeah...but still nothing that'd be good against another platinum.

Dan K

My guess is functionally it will be the same just much more efficient magick wise.

christian montgomery

@bitch I’m not sure exactly what you mean? Could you elaborate a little?

christian montgomery

@dan k possibly? But we know Tyron has added soul destroying magic to the screaming skulls, has accomplished the basics of destroying magic, and has magic available to him that converts arcane magic to death magic (grave moons). Any of those could be mixed into it. There’s also the possibility he learns how to replicate a version of the rot spell he used to get into the red tower. Then applies that to his newest spell to make a tiny death head capable of destroying a gate, or a wall. How he could accomplish that, I have no idea, but it is somewhat possible. Especially with Tyron being a genius of magic, the final version of that spell could be something truly spectacular

Tesset

I am not sure if he added soul destroying magic to the screaming skulls or the skulls had soul destroying magic from the beginning and he removed it when he started fighting the golden legion in the hope of preserving their souls. It was never stated what the original spell could do. If so, I would imagine removing components from a spell is much easier than adding extra. There have to be tones of limitations when adding extra stuff. So we don’t know yet if has reached the point, or if its even possible, where he can just add any effect from any one of the spell to another.

bitch

What i mean by that is we've only seen Tyrone develop seige spells up to this point, despite him having a giant vulnerability to hard targets, ie platinum level people. Despite all of Tyrone's efforts, none of his creations are really duelist tier and due to exponential power scaling that's standard in the genre, it's not really possible to wear such a person out with chaff alone, or even really slow them down as we saw in the last fight with a fellow platinum rank. All Tryone is left with is his contingencies in that scenario, which A.) will likely make him inhuman in a lessor form than ideal *he would give up his immense durability if he became his current lich design and B.) He would run the risk of being constantly killed until his phactry can be found/at critical moments when the army needs his spells and needs him to raise more troops. There is a significant risk of a serious platinum user wiping out his whole army.

christian montgomery

I’m pretty sure he added the soul destroying effect, considering the ones used in the siege didn’t have any. Also, all of the new spells he was getting from leveling up were related to spells/mysteries he already had, and the screaming skulls were unlocked before he experimented(?) with soul magic. So, I don’t think it had the soul destroying effects originally. As far as what he can actually add/subtract, I’m betting it’s both fairly limited and fairly open. For instance, anything related to attacking(including the curses), I believe he could add to his original spell, but anything related to creating undead, the rituals for communicating with his patrons, or his enchanting(?), I don’t think he could add to it. Basically, if it’s related to the main purpose of the spell, he could likely add it to a spell, but anything outside of that specific purpose, I don’t think he could add.

Terry

Great chapter!

Gonvas

The original version of the siege spell has the death magick parasites that brought the 5k Legion to its knees. It also caused a loss of vitality when in contact with the miasma (IMO, it may be what creates the parasites). Soul magick version, the curse instead of clinging to the body and steal vitality, it went to the soul. Unlike original version, the miasma wasn't dispersed after a few seconds so in a matter of a few minutes most legionaries had lost their souls.

Greyg

We have yet to hear from Rinoz where the death parasite comes from exactly unless its on the discord no idea i assume the grave moon or if it’s just from his knowledge of death magick itself, as the siege spell has soul damage how many effects does it have or need. Even the status sheet wouldn’t help us much in this regard. Grave moon being connected to the realm of death would make the parasite effect more logical then just attaching another aspect to the siege spell, as currently the grave moon pulls in mana from far away. Going back to his fight with the golden legion his first siege skulls had no soul effect(added after he was captured) they could have been delivering the parasite or the active grave moon they both happened prior to heart parasites discovery.

Hayden Leech

Boo. It’s definitely getting toned down from old Tyron. I was hoping to see him leave corrupted wastelands behind him. Not just… purging cities of nobles before wandering off to do it again. Is there a larger plan here? Any guarantee they didn’t flee with the citizens out the gate? Atleast the important ones. Any reason the nobles won’t just move back in with the citizens once Tyron’s army is far enough away? Unless Tyron kills ten thousand people here than he isn’t growing his horde. This reduced him and that’s not a winning strategy. Plus the empire will just raise another family to take the place of this ladisa family. Tyron’s not doing damage by doing this. Nothing meaningful. If Tyron starts sparing noble kids I’m outta here lol.

Olavi Kaukamieli

I don't think he lacks bodies for skellies. Just good mage resources.

UNKNOWN

I personally like this reborn Tyron. The barely-stable killing machine was a timebomb that didn't go off.

christian montgomery

@bitch That’s true, insomuch as that’s all we’ve seen Tyron do. But he also hasn’t needed to do anything yet for a platinum-level threat. At least, since he began developing his original spells. What I mean by that is he hasn’t encountered anyone or anything that would require anti-platinum level spell work. Testing any such spells out against lower-ranked targets wouldn’t be very beneficial either as they just can’t match up to a platinum ranked target. Right now, he needs the siege spells as that’s his biggest weakness when attacking a city. It’s also the one he can test out to see its full effectiveness and deficiencies immediately, thus allowing him to work on them constantly. I’m pretty sure we’ll see anti-platinum level spells eventually, though it’ll be whenever he runs into a platinum ranked threat.

Tomer Yud

I wonder what forces the empire can master. Surely they have forces stronger than platinum

Hayden Leech

Meh. I’ve read this kind of story a dozen times. Mc wanders down a dark path then comes back. I kind of get it. I can how people would be disturbed about reading a guy systematically wiping out bloodlines children included. Heck every time it happens we get a wave of squeamish comments. At the end of the day I know it’s a book and can read anything. That Tyron was so brutal and broken was what made it so good. Old Tyron was novel. You don’t get main character like that. People seem to prefer a tamer more palatable MC. Like yourself, myself I would prefer to read something I haven’t read before. You’re right tho, Tyron was a time bomb. That’s good! I don’t want what’s best for Tyron. I want an epic story. I want him to burn the world. No half measures. I think we are going to see lots of half measures. Betcha Tyron is going to find a way to strip the noble class from children. Bleh.

Gonvas

We already know where they come from. It's on the novel xD

Runaway_Cactuar

I think you're confusing determined psycho from murderhobo. Ty is still efficiently merciless, but only to the Divines and people on his way. Not only is indiscriminate slaughter against that directive, it's inefficient. The time it takes to kill everyone is not trivial. And it's not like he has a lot of time on his hands since another Golden Legion is coming his way.

Hayden Leech

Nah. It’s not indiscriminate slaughter that I enjoyed. I liked that Tyron didn’t care. Tyron isn’t just not participating in indiscriminate slaughter anymore. He is actively avoiding collateral damage. For example. Tyron is powering down the grave moons not to save energy. Not for any practical reason at all beyond not wanting to ruin the city so that regular people can still live there. Killing everyone and raising them/using them as materials would benefit him huge. But he didn’t. Because now he has considerations beyond his revenge. That’s fucking lame. He cares now. That gets a boo from me.

Hayden Leech

“But I don’t care!” Tyron burst out, eyes hardening. “I don’t care about any of them. Even before the vampires messed with my head, I didn’t care. No matter how many died, no matter how much suffering I caused. Ever since… ever since… it happened, I feel like I haven’t felt anything at all except anger and hate. I see how the ghosts act, how they scream and rage, filled with spite for the living, and I feel exactly the same way.  “Sometimes I wake up in the morning feeling completely numb, wondering if I’m already dead.” He breathed out slowly as something deep within his chest slowly eased. “I’m going to go through with it. I’ll destroy the talismans, set the gold-rank Slayers free, and then watch while Kenmor burns to the ground. All those people are going to die, and I know that I won’t care, because I’m not done. I won’t stop until the entire Empire has been burned to the ground and The Five Divines are pulled down from their perch and buried in the dirt. “I’m going to cause… millions of people to die, and I just can’t bring myself to care.” Remember this? That means a lot less now than it did. Says one thing. Does another. Boo.

Greyg

The empire fundamentally nerfs the class advancement of its own people. Slayers (gifted individuals like his parents exist that push further) are disposable and branded for compliance thrown against the riftkin keeping the world stable, but on the decline. The golden legion are allowed to advance only so far. The nobles born from the divines upper echelon families can advance we have yet to see their limits or potential if any exist. The platinums are allowed to advance, but are either dumb or subject to life long indoctrination. Perhaps the divines have a personal army or they sit in a pocket dimension similar to the dark forest stewing in their own delusions of grandeur. The divines are unlikely to allow people to advance anywhere close to themselves or their families so if an advance force exists it would be from the divine’s families, but even then i think their narcissism wouldn’t allow even that

Olavi Kaukamieli

For a long time we didn't even know there was anything above platinum. We know now one character.

Hayden Leech

Haha. And then you have the bobble heads like you that just happily swallow everything put infront of them. God forbid people try and talk about something haha.

deesuschrist

Eh, I think him not killing people who have zero skin in the game is better, not to mention that people potentially supporting him once they truly realize he's not just indiscriminately slaughtering everyone is also a potential benefit. But I respect your opinion

bitch

Perhaps, but you'd think someone as neurotic as Tyrone would have come up with something after being nearly killed and actually conquered by a platinum

christian montgomery

I think he was planning on it originally, but he got distracted. He set out to conquer more rifts to gain levels, came up with his first original spell, then needed to deal with his patrons, then the dust folk and master Wilhelm, and finally March across the southern province. Plus, Tyron isn’t the same person as we’ve been following the past couple of books. The vampires really screwed up his head, and now we’re seeing the original Tyron in action. If the vampire queen hadn’t undone her spell, he likely would’ve come up with an original spell for a platinum rank, and then shelved it since he wouldn’t be able to test it. Or thrown it away and tried again as soon as he did get to test it against a platinum.

bitch

I think the vampire tinkering was strictly to do with ruthlessness and morality, not so much spellcraft

christian montgomery

The ruthlessness (I think) contributed to some of his spellcraft. And without that, he isn’t testing out anti-platinum spellwork on low ranked opponents

DZ

Briss on HER heels.

bitch

Uhh I doubt more nobles will be born on the timescale of this war. Also it's never really been Tyron's goal to kill normal people and it doesn't really benefit him until he perfects soul magic, anyways

Ras

That reanimation feat so those 10k skeletons would self-repair would be useful right about now. He lost 1/10 of his army just taking the walls and clearing the city. He'll have quite some issues later up against stronger enemies. And his new spell seems a bit underwhelming if he couldn't have used it on the wall too. Maybe he should focus his efforts on developing a spell that can take out a platinum swordsman he fears so much?

Ras

From chapter 6c27: "With Mantle of the Imperator rolling down his shoulders and his best iteration of bone armour yet equipped, Tyron felt quite safe and capable of defending himself. If he should fail, Filetta and his personal guard, marching in dense formation around his platform would be more than capable of holding off anything that wasn't a blasted platinum ranked swordsman." So the only thing he seems to fear is a platinum swordsman, yet he has taken no effort to counter such an entity. You'd think he'd try to avoid the situation he found himself last he went up against one of those.

Apotheosis

Oh I do enjoy filetta
