It didn't take long for confirmation to come. Not one champion had been born into the Colony, but two. As the rest of the ants hatched from their cocoons and emerged, pale and still hardening, they were ushered away as a group to be fed their first meal and given time to adapt to their new forms. After all, they couldn't allow any risk of injury until their carapaces had hardened properly. At least, any further risk of injury. Everyone was under strict instructions not to allow the first champion to gain any sort of altitude. Even so she was constantly hopping and jumping about, as if being on the ground was literally painful to her.

As much as Demetant yearned to be with them, to help care for the group as they had their first proper meals and prepared for induction into the antcademy, she herself had been whisked away along with Doonant and the others and found herself face to face with someone she had never thought she would meet.

"Two champions at once. It's never happened before in the history of the Colony," Theresant said, flustered. "And for two of them to be born into the exact same clutch of twenty? It’s unheard of. It's unprecedented! We have to know what happened here. Was there something different about this group? Did you notice something when they were eggs? In what way did their treatment differ during the larval stage?"

Demetant struggled to speak, not knowing what to say. She fought frantically to find some calm, but no matter how hard she tried, she couldn't seem to find it.

Brood Tenders were supposed to be placid and calm at all times, she chastised herself and demanded that she pull herself together. It didn't help.

"There was nothing out of the ordinary in their treatment. By the book, as always," Doonant said, not seeming to struggle at all. She was as warm and motherly as always.

"That can't be," Theresant said intensely. "There has to have been something different. Otherwise how do you explain this outcome?"

"Blind luck," Doonant said. "As far as we've been able to learn, the birth of champions is probabilistic. Higher mana concentrations increase the odds but don't guarantee anything. We've gone multiple waves without a champion, and now two have been born. The fact they happen to be born in the same place at the same time is extremely unlikely, but not impossible."

"I suppose it could be that way," Theresant muttered, but it didn't seem as though she was willing to accept it.

Seeing the look of confusion on Demetant's face, Doonant leaned closer to her and explained.

"They think they might be able to learn what turns an egg into a champion and therefore increase the number of champions born to the Colony. Two of them being born here is leading them to think there might be a secret that they can learn."

"Increasing the rate of champion births would be highly beneficial to the Colony," Theresant said, "and have a tremendous impact on the success of the family. As Brood Tenders, this is just another aspect of our role that we need to master, same as any other."

"I don't disagree," Doonant deferred peacefully, "but looking for patterns to explain random chaos is wasteful. Also, this is the first clutch of brood that my fellow tender here has cared for in her career. Right now she is missing their first meal and unable to care for them as she has always wanted."

"What?" Theresant said, her mandibles snapping shut as she turned to stare at Demetant, horrified. "Why didn't someone tell me? Get out of here and go look after them! This is something you absolutely can't miss!"

Shocked, Demetant didn't move at first and only when she was physically shooed out of the room by the Council member did she finally gain speed. Out into the corridor, she turned and began to walk towards where the hatchlings had been taken. After a few seconds, she found that she was running.

A great mess hall filled with thousands of ants greeted her eyes. These were all of the recently hatched ants being prepared for their intake, getting ready for their first induction and being instructed in the ways of true selflessness. Her focus landed directly onto her small clutch of twenty and she raced towards them.

"Ah! There she is!"

Demetant looked up and was horrified to realise that the first champion was on the roof of the chamber, other Tenders huddled beneath her while some rushed up the walls to try and catch her. How did she possibly sneak away while there were so many compound eyes on her?

"BEHOLD MY MAJESTIC FLIGHT!" she screamed before launching herself from the rock.

Desperate, Demetant lunged and caught the hatchling out of the air with her mandibles before landing heavily in a tangle of legs right in the middle of another group's meal.

"Sorry," she said to them while the champion laughed maniacally.

"I was this close to taking flight," she declared. "Next time I'll succeed for certain."

"You could grow wings when you evolve, you know?" Demetant said wearily.

The hatchling jumped in shock.

"Why didn't anyone tell me, dammit!?"

🤣🤣🤣 Champion hatchlings might be one of my favorite things lmao

The red barants first flight will be glorious!

Pockman

That’s all you had to say, good instincts, Demetant

Drew Lim

What if demetant is a champion herself?

UNKNOWN

The common denominator is Anthony I think. Do we know if Anthony was awake when Merchant was born?

zozzy the beast

That's exactly what I thought. I imagine a champion brood tender wouldn't really stand out.

Buck

Not the USAF! Not the RAF! Not the RAAF! Behold the birth of the Colony Air Force (CAF)!!

John H

I was thinking the same!

A Wanderer Telling Tales

BTW: anyone have the chapter number when Tolly went to stock exchange on the 4th?

Phil Ritter

I guess our hatchling has finally found the motivation to stop their acts and put everything into evolving and mutating

Phil Ritter

I’ve seen this theory a lot over the last chapters and have to agree that brood tenders and queens would be rather low key in their early development. The healer would likely also have been found much later without her idiot sister trying to kill herself right next to her

Alright Illmakeone

Champions are born with cores right? Surely she would have been found out if she was a champion. After all, it's not an umbrella term, there are specific characteristics champions have and so far Demetant hasn't shown any of them.

TheLostGolem

I don't think so? Vibrant absorbed a core as a grub IIRC? Might be wrong.

Buck

If he thought it would impress Morrelia, he would switch from cavalry to air force ASAP.

Nachotoad

No all champions start with cores has been confirmed, but I think there has also been mention that some non-champion monsters can start which cores as well so the presence of a core is not confirmation of champions status that usually gets confirmed by their effect on fellow monsters as champions naturally collect followers. In the case of the Formica Sapiens, the independence that comes with being a champion also makes them less deferent to their elders and prone to deviation from standard Colony practices. Which is why they are always a pain in the business district for the brood tenders. If i recall what Vibrant did was absorb some cores Anthony was saving when she was a grub. She then popped out of her cocoon with a core which was discovered when Anthony was advising her on her fist evolution to take a core and she said she already had one. This was pre the champion reveal. So, I think there was an assumption that the core absorption resulted in her initial core formation, but it is possible she just gobbled them up for some extra evo points.

Imagine the Healers, stationed with the Immortals, find out about the Healer Champion. I bet they'd just laugh and laugh and laugh.

TheLostGolem

I see. Thank you for the clarification. Appreciate it!

CentaureHeart

I just want Anthony to be brought in on this. There is some serious thwacking that's not being applied properly for Champion education.

Nathan Patrick

Unfortunately Anthony won't be able to thwack personally. He is already scared to kill higher tier ants on accident.

Brandon14754

It was retconed in the books around brilliants birth every champion is born with a core. There are no hidden champions in the colony as it's super easy to know if they are or not as new borns. The colony only has 6 now, vibrant, brilliant, solant, merchant and the two new twin champions

Greyg

Super sayiant gravity training

Brian Schwab

He could do it via a proxy, like the healer champion. Just a glance her way as an indicator to thwack the flyer for him again. It could even be a healing thwack coming from a healer!

Scott Faulkner

ya they reintroduce the craziness of those first few books were everything was new and exciting.

Scott Faulkner

Anthony was sleeping off the Therizen gunk when Merchant was learning how to make money from Enid.

Kail311

Them talking about how unprecedented this is and how they know their haven't been any champions recently got me thinking. What about "Project Phoenix"? After their first major siege they had the idea to hide various offshoot colonies to make sure they don't get fully wiped out in a war. What would happen if a champion spawned in a secret colony? Would they breach containment to contact Anthony or keep it hidden?

Silent Consent

The next stratum is gona be weird if it’s mostly just open air and floating hunks or something. The normal ants will have very serious problems adapting so they are going to need to get this group down there for Anthony to instruct very soon. He is the only other “flying” ant after all. I wonder if the carvers have tried much core surgery on their fellow ants. That could be interesting, especially if they modified a queen for flying and her offspring could be tweaked for the specific stratum they operate in. There is no reason to stick with Anthony’s clumsy first attempt. You know the legion would do it if they were the colony.

I have a feeling that the due is gonna be called Urgegant and Carant because it's a pun waiting to happen
