Basment of Owls

I don’t know how much of the lineage of the AEW World Title you know so I won’t spoil anything. I wasn’t watching when this happened so I can’t say exactly but I would assume people would find the shortness shocking. It could be reasonable to assume Brodie could win but perhaps not in such dominating fashion, it totally worked though. I thought I heard somewhere that Cody based the match off Inoki vs Vader. Inoki vs Vader was covered in the Super Eyepatch Wolf video on Heels, basically where New Japan founder / top guy Antonio Inoki was squashed by Vader to make him into this huge monster. Same sorta thought process here where Cody, one of the founders / heroes of AEW is destroyed to make another guy seem like this monster super villain

Cody was a big name at the time, but for some reason (I believe it was his idea) he lost Chris Jericho and was not able to challenge for the AEW World Title ever again, and this happened in 2019, so Cody until he left he was just a big name in the midcard and thats why he was TNT Champion, but even in the midcard Cody was a big name and it was not expected for the first ever TNT champion to lose in dominance fashion in 3 minutes and 10 seconds :D

This was a huge moment in early AEW because Cody WAS still that same guy. He was the unflappable babyface that always dug down deep and pulled out the win. The expectation going into this match is that it would be the same thing. That as imposing and threatening that Brodie Lee was and had become since becoming “The Exalted One” in AEW; that Cody would still overcome him. It was not only a shock to see Cody lose at all, but lose in an emphatic way. The title that Brodie dumped on Cody was a placeholder TNT title that Cody was using because the pandemic shut down the belt’s production and they scrambled to get that tin one that Cody was using. I believe the red strap was retired after Brodie’s untimely passing and changed to black, but it was such a shocking moment that one of the faces of AEW was essentially taken behind the woodshed and beaten down.

City and Local

Cody had TOO MUCH respect for the business to not book himself up to be the top guy in his own company. The fans saw right through it. They wanted the angry renegade from his indie run. Towards the end, he just became a performative in-betweener that shoud've went heel. Doesn't change the fact that the people still adored him and Brandi. He made so many young stars in that time period. I have a conspiracy theory that he purposely planned to go back to WWE, only to return back to AEW and take it to another level. I won't hold my breath on it. But could you imagine?

Now you need to watch the dog collar match. It’s so good and an incredible final match for Brodie.

They 100% NEED to see that match, and its sad that was his last match because he pasted away, but aleast he went out with a banger ❤️

Yes, the crowd was all wrestlers. They were the only crowd allowed in at this time.

Man I miss watching Brodie Lee 😭 it’s crazy that he was only in AEW for 9 months, but still had one of the best runs in company history🔥

I thought the theme was squash matches, but I suppose that's close enough. You might have missed this from early commentary, but Cody was defending the TNT championship almost every week as a TV title. They didn't book it that way for every champion. At the time, it and the World Title were the only male singles titles in the company, so the frequent defenses helped define it.

There is a reason why Cody was considered a top guy in AEW but was holding a secondary belt. I’m not going to say why because it spoils something that I’m sure someone will want to submit for you, especially after you asked the question you asked in the video, but there is a good reason for it. Yes, he was considered a top guy, if not the top guy at the start of AEW. I would honestly say for the first almost year of AEW, he was the most popular wrestler in the company, even ahead of someone like Kenny Omega, which even though I always loved Cody, though he wasn’t my favorite wrestler at the time, but he is now, it was still surprising to me because I just figured AEW‘s hard-core audience, though that audience had grown to love Cody immensely, would be so hyped and behind Kenny for being the big star that he was in Japan and getting his shot on the western stage. really it all comes down to Cody‘s outstanding promo work during this time period, not to mention his, ironically enough, very anti-WWE attitude, really he was more anti-WWE than anybody.

One of my favorites early AEW matches. Loved Brodie's entire run, though it ended tragically and abruptly. You guys should check out the video package AEW put out for Brodie (and the whole memorial show in your own time) because it's truly beautiful.

Also if Brodie was around now I wonder what the Dark Order's history looks like, even though im glad they got a story with Hangman. Maybe Brodie would be in the Death Riders? Could have a Bruiser Brody feel fr lol RIP Brodie Lee

Steamed Ham Champion Dillon Haggett

This match legit put me to sleep lol. I never got the hype for Luke Harper/Brodie Lee. I never thought the guy was all that special. Good wrestler, that was it though.
