Love when you guys watch older stuff and learn some history even if its just a snapshot of the time it took place in! This will be a great watch

Big Ell

I’m so old I saw this in the theater. Excited to relive.

Abridged Goku

There are two really great docs I recommend which is The rise and fall of ECW and wrestling in shadows.

Ryan Evans

In a way patreon is tally and josh history channel for wrestling as there watching old stuff they never seen before so it cool to see there reactions to things as there newer fans then most of us

Michael

Terry Funk continued wrestling till 2017 when he was 73 years old 😅

Tallywags

That's crazy 😂

Tallywags

That must have been so cool. I wish they'd make something like that today. Seems like something like that would just get added to Peacock or Netflix now

Zach Faulkner

I will say, back in the 80's/90's, Jakes experience was not that uncommon. Lots of wrestlers have spoken about how rampant the drugs and alcohol were and that there was a lot of pressure to use them. Hunter has done some interviews talking about how he didn't get into the drug/alcohol culture and that he was the exception at the time and not the norm in the locker room. But that the guys loved it because he could always drive for them, especially DX. I remember Hunter telling stories about HBK and X-Pac where he was constantly finding them passed out from overdoses and not knowing if they would survive.

The Jake Roberts stuff is just very unfortunate and awkward Also unfortunate that the dad stories are indeed true(sick creep) Mick and Terry just warmed my heart they were the parts I was waiting for

Beyond the Mat showed Jake the Snake at his lowest, but he did defeated his demon back in 2012. There's a documentary called the Resurrection of Jake the Snake where they filmed his road to recovery. He's currently under contract for AEW as a special advisor.

Lee Brennan

This doc was mind blowing for 12 year old me at the time lol. Obviously I was old enough to realise wrestling was staged, but getting this much of a look behind the curtain was insane for the time. It also left me feeling a bit sad (especially with the Jake stuff) and the harsh nature of the business. It's a tough lifestyle for sure. Foley and Funk's friendship is so awesome and wholesome (as funny as that sounds considering their wild ass matches). Two wrestling greats that don't get nearly enough praise as they should tbh. Thoroughly enjoyed reliving this alongside y'all

Charlie

He wrestled like 200 matches after his first retirement in '97 too, it's not like he just did the occasional nostalgia match lol

Ryan Evans

There really good docs hopefully one day tally and Josh see them

aloneinabox

Hey guys, some heavy stuff in there for sure but glad you both appreciated it for what it was. You're spot on that access like that wasn't common at the time, which makes Beyond The Mat a really interesting piece of wrestling media.

SwantonAtomBomb

I just wanna add about that bit on APW that Josh googled at the end, The wrongful death incident Brian Ong was training with a new Indian trainee who didn't know or understand much english named Dalip Singh who a few years later was singed by WWE under the name The Great Khali. (yes that great khali)

Richard Kings

Great reaction. It's strange both of you don't remember Droz from the Dark Side of the Ring reaction you did, Brawl for All. That episode tells the story of what happened to him

Dporticus

If I had one wish, it would be to be able to remember every detail of the 500+ things weve watched in here 😆

Willow Falls

Don't worry. Puke didn't last long. He quickly became Droz and is better remembered as that these days.

Tallywags

Or if it was all in order 😆

Willow Falls

"On to happier stuff..." they said. Next up: Mick Foley's match with The Rock at the Royal Rumble....

Jay T

Crazy to see how far Jake Roberts has come due to the help of DDP Honestly, believe he would’ve passed away over 10 years ago like most of his other coworkers from the 80s due to that lifestyle of hard living, constant drinking and drug abuse just to numb the pain, but at least Jake had a happy ending unlike most of his other contemporaries. He’s been sober for a decade now and actually got back together with his ex-wife from 25 years ago and is on speaking terms of most of his kids again. There’s actually amazing documentary that talks about how DDP got him sober called the resurrection of Jake Roberts. DDP’s actually has gotten several other wrestlers sober over the past few years actually.

Willow Falls

Wrestlers are like any other group of people. Some of them used drugs to get through the business, some of them didn't. Going out for beers after shows was pretty common, I hear, but Jake... from what I hear... may have leaned into it a bit. Honestly, it's probably easier for wrestlers to fall into that trap, but I'd like to think a good many avoided it. I hope so, anyway.

Willow Falls

That match between Mick Foley and The Rock at the Royal Rumble was one of my favorite matches, from the night it happened, (when I was a 19 year old fan), right up until the first time I saw Beyond The Mat. One thing I always remember, a friend of mine who watched wrestling, but never got as into it as I did, was very much disturbed by that match from the first time I ever showed it to him. I... didn't get that, at the time. Didn't get that till I saw Beyond The Mat actually. It is what it is.

Willow Falls

I believe Diamond Dallas Page played a role in that as well.

Ryan Redd

It’s not really an excuse, but Jake’s father was a real piece of shit. As in, worse than Benoit. Jake and all his siblings were dealt really bad hands. Fortunately, he’s been clean for a decade and is living out the rest of his life as stable as possible.

Noct

I'd love to watch this reaction, Josh and Tally, but I'm not booked.

Jerel

Jake Roberts had a Dark Side episode also and pretty damn disturbing also. Glad hes been sober for a long time time and does conventions. Did some early AEW work with Cody so hes had a rough life but glad hes doing well now. Yeah gotta check the Resurection of Jake the Snake. DDP is a God send and amazing human. Helped Jake and Scott Hall and many others also.

Noct

I'm in.

Noct

One thing to keep in mind when you look at wrestlers like Jake Roberts who got their start in the 70s and early 80s is how different a beast wrestling was then. Before Vince turned it into a nation-wide, then world-wide entertainment product, pro wrestling was very much a profession that attracted people who often lived on the fringes and were comfortable (or even thrived) living transient, sometimes outlaw lives. For every Ric Flair or Hulk Hogan, you had your Jake Roberts, your Bruiser Brody, your Billy Jack Haynes. Not saying he isn't exaggerating for the camera, because he is a showman and a carny at heart, but he did come up in the business at a time when things were much less regulated, stable, and safe.

Ian Hernandez

I’m also not booked, and I see you already offered the referee position to someone else, but it’s fine, I have other engagements now.

Ian Hernandez

I can verify a couple of things for you with certainty, which isn’t to say that every single word that came out of Jake’s mouth was the gospel truth, but the fact is, his childhood was really as messed up as he said it was, and secondly, the schedule really was that bad. I’m not saying that having a really messed up childhood and an incredibly inhumane schedule gives you the right to be awful, but it does lessen culpability to a certain extent, I think we all can agree. As the old saying goes, any day of the week, and twice on Sunday, except for WWF wrestlers in the 80s, it wasn’t just a saying. I don’t think wrestlers worked twice every week, but it wasn’t that uncommon, and the WWF many times did have two shows on the same day, however, sometimes that also meant they had two different crews, so having two shows in one day didn’t necessarily mean that all the wrestlers had to work twice, but sometimes they did. Honestly virtually every wrestler to a man in the 80s did drugs, maybe Brett is the only one that I’ve never heard anyone saying that he did anything, but maybe I’m also just not remembering, but while everyone did the drugs, some people handled them better than others, as wild of a sentence as that is to write. I was too young to experience this in real time, but it was quite literally an epidemic of very notable high profile wrestlers dying on more than frequent occasion in the 90s and 2000s. The only wrestlers I remember dying were Eddie Guerrero and Chris Benoit, because they were wrestlers I actually watched, but all of the old wrestlers that were dropping like flies didn’t register for me. I actually think the Eddie death hit harder for me until I got older and realized the circumstances of Chris Ben was death, and of course, the surrounding murders of his family. Anyways, that was a really long comment, but hopefully it cleared some things up.

Baxter

and then terry funk would go to wrestle for 10 plus or how many other years he wrestled after his "retirement" here.

Nicholas Kramer

Mick was expecting 3 or 4 chair shots to get up the ramp. The Rock got caught up in the moment and went overboard with 11 I think it was. I don't think he meant for it to be as brutal as it was.

Jennifer from Sweden

I'm so happy you put up this for free now that I had to take a break. It will be interesting to watch this " with you". Hope all is well with whoever reads this ❤️🌈

Jennifer from Sweden

Bret said he used coke for a little while but stopped rather quickly as he realized the dangers of it. It's just an inevitably wrestling for that they need pain medication, especially on the old schedule.

Ian Hernandez

First of all I really like your name, very much on the nose, and second, dang, now you say that I think I do remember something about that, very sad. Cocaine will mess you up, but honestly, even though maybe they didn’t end up dead as young as their counterparts, I feel like the people who did steroids ended up more miserable body wise, I mean look at Superstar Billy Graham.

Big Ell

Josh go to 1:30:45 of this video and check out your boy The Blue Meanie lol
