If you split the figure in the picture in two then you see normal reflection of light. There is a very similar reflection on the right of staircase. Just cover the "head" and it is a normal stair. Cover the body and you see a reflection of furniture on the landing. There is a beam of light visible and the railings also are bright due to light reflection.

I feel like this became more popular in the late 1700s to early 1800s because of projector shows like Phantasmagoria. Its what helped drive the idea of ghosts being see through and floating. Given that these were people of wealth i could definitely see this helping influence the ghost sightings if theyd been to any of the Phantasmagoria showings.

My mother has had a kind ghost interaction. They had just moved into my childhood home which was a schoolhouse built in 1890. She was home alone and heard voices in the attic that sounded like they were having a tea party with conversation and laughter. She went to slowly go up the stairs and they creaked and the voices shushed each other. She never heard them again

I wonder if the photographer took a picture of the statue of the Virgin Mary while on the property or some place else, some how forgot, then took the picture of the staircase? Like Fredo said, the shape & pose of the statue next to the original picture makes it very obvious.
