Exploring the tragic and mysterious final days leading up to the disappearance of a college student from a small California town: the Disappearance of Christine Walters.

In 2008, a young woman participated in a wellness retreat that would change her life forever. She was set to return home to her parents, but she came back from the retreat paranoid, frightened, and convinced someone was out to get her. When making her arrangements to come home, she walked out the door of a local copy center and was never seen again. Today, we’re discussing the Disappearance of Christine Walters.

Ah, didn't think we'd end up in my neck of the woods. I'm not from here but I've lived up here for almost 15 years now. It's truly gorgeous out here, the nature is absolutely insane but so are a lot of the people. This place gets people hooked on drugs, people seem nice but nah. She's one of the Humboldt 5(ooh you just mentioned them). Recently (2019) a bone of one of the missing women was found of a beach. I could see someone coming out here and even without drugs getting in with the wrong people, ending up in the wrong place (like "the hill" or out in the mountains where people go missing when they stumble upon illegal grow operations. We are a part of the Emerald triangle, weed, weed, weed babbby, so it's hella dangerous out where the wild west of weed is still going even now --oop and you just mentioned this too lol) Glad you guys covered this one! Truly anything could have happened. People who love nature travel all around Humboldt looking for trails, coastal access, redwoods and anyone be out there, even being out there alone is very dangerous. When it comes to this what happened with everyone else that had gone to the tea ceremony? Where were they from, who did they know? Did any of them disappear without a trace but no one noticed? It's so disturbing.

My birth-Mom suffered from late onset schizophrenia, she would be around that age

One thing I think is pertinent is that Urine drug screens at most hospitals don’t screen for a lot of hallucinogenic drugs. Generally it’s opiates, amphetamines, THC, cocaine, PCP. More complex ones would also test for meth, amphetamines commonly use for adhd treatment,, benzos, barbiturates, methadone/Suboxone, MDMA, fentanyl, tricyclic antidepressants, tramadol, sometimes diphenhydramine (benedryl) . You have to specifically order testing for DMT, LSD, peyote, psilocybin, DMT, ketamine, mescaline, etc rather than it being part of the routine screening Additionally, there are people who basically develop schizophrenia after drug use. Not while they’re high but it can trigger the psychosis even after the high.

My partner and I went to Eureka for our honeymoon this last year, we just got an air bnb in a small cabin to look at the redwoods and stuff, and even in 2025 I could see how someone would maybe just disappear in that area because even know it's not very big and with how much of California there is and the coast right there, anything could happen if you're not familiar with the area

I went to college of the redwoods in eureka, which is on thompkins hill Rd. Was only there for a year before covid sent me back and I moved across the country but I'm grad you guys talked about murder mountain. There was definitely folklore and kind of an awareness not to get too far off the beaten paths and hiking trails. Best case scenario you get lost, worst case you never come back. Could very well be that she witnessed something she shouldn't have, potentially while tripping, which led to paranoia and either an accidental death or someone trying to clean up witnesses. Hope she's found someday soon, ideally living a new life somewhere warm

I was going to say it sounded like an ayahuasca ceremony with the confusion, paranoia and the whole “smoke” thing. There are a lot of sketchy “shaman”. I know of a few different people who have gotten in trouble for using fake or altered products. It’s a lucrative industry with a lot of abuse and not a lot of oversite. I wish they had done more extensive drug/toxicity testing. Given her background in ethno-botany, I wonder if she may have called out some of those practices and may have gotten herself into trouble.

This is giving big cult vibes. Someone has a life changing meeting/experience, suddenly makes lots of changes in their life and at first seems happy, then disappears off the map. Health retreats are a big intake point for cults, and her paranoia could be valid fear of someone from the cult coming after her or paranoia that was indoctrinated into her by the cult. Maybe she really did lose her memory from drugs, or maybe she didn’t want to talk about her experiences for any number of reasons. Someone should definitely look into that health retreat and the health center.

This is great insight and context. Thanks for sharing!

Make no mistake, we hate the concept of Flock cameras, even before current events.

So very interesting. Love the added insights from your local experience!

My mom and I are convinced it’s a cult. Oregon has a rich history of religious and spiritual groups that are often considered cults. Her decision to uproot her entire life took place on her trip to Oregon and with the people she met there. It makes sense to us for it to have been a cult that lured her in with a false sense of safety and belonging. I wish we had more information about the health center where her backpack was found. It seems odd that an experienced hiker would leave their bag (unless she had a different one with water, snacks, and a health kit). From the map, the building also looks far from the forest she was said to hike in after dropping her bag off.

She wasn't paranoid if someone was out to get her! she was cautious and concerned
