The life, death, and sightings of Nelly Butler, known as America's first ghost with one of the most recorded sightings in history.

America’s first ghost story follows the tragic life and death of a young woman from Maine. She married her lover, but passed during childbirth. While her soul remained earth-bound, she didn’t haunt her ex-husband, but instead a nearby family. She spoke with them often, and began to appear to the townspeople. This led to her becoming one of the most recorded ghost sightings in history. Today, we’re taking a closer look at the haunting case of Nelly Butler.

Sensitive topics: Complications from childbirth, death of a child

To answer Alfredo's question! There is a well-documented ghost cat in Gettysburg, PA, at the Tillie Pierce House Inn

An interesting dive (related to animals and the afterlife) might be to look at how many cultures see companion animals (like dogs and horses) and birds (owls, crows, ravens) as guides for spirits to cross over after death. Another fun topic might be other ghost animal stories, like the Demon Cat in DC.

I'm wondering if anyone asked Nelly why she was still around, but if they did you'd think that would have been in the pamphlet & be part of the story. The theory of cursing the husband is hard to believe simply because he then went on to marry a third time & have 7 kids. It'd be more believable if it happened to all his wives or drove him into insanity. Wild story.
