Gillion could freeze Koopa Kenta in a wall of frozen water, Gillion could also cast haste and immediately drop concentration on it, and Gillion could use the channel divinity to trap Kenta in a bubble. Chip could. Jay can cast hold person which might not work since Kenta may not be a humanoid, Jay could push him back using the force ballista. Ollie could be enlarged and throw Kenta since he would have advantage and a +5

mocco

i absolutely love talking about mechanics, it’s a really cool aspect of the show we don’t get to see often and by the end we’re all better educated am i right people that have learned dnd from podcasts (me)

Alright this'll be 2 comments bc I'll have to review some abilities of the team, but for tactics you want Gillian to sentinel Jay so she can get consistent damage off from the back in case there are more enemies, meanwhile Gil buffs Chip who should be able to avoid Kuba while everyone gets out of the building. The trick is Gil and Chip cast steam cloud together, hopefully giving Kinta disadvantage, and it should only take 1 turn to get Gil and Jay out but Chip can sneak attack from the fog, retreat outside and hide again, then when Kinta goes outside and focuses on Gil/Jay because he gets hit by their readied attack/sentinel feat, Chip sneak attacks again. If there's a way to contact the crew, maybe using Gilligan's smite as a flare in the middle of the night would work, and if Gillian has to get in close Ollie could toss Jay up on a roof so Gil doesn't have to do double duty. This is all also assuming that: 1. Ollie didn't go inside. 2. Rufus and his wife aren't able to help. 3. That Jay's message can't reach back to the ship and alert the crew to bring in reinforcements.

Okay comment 2 now that I've looked at char sheets. Not gonna read about Rakshasa bc not trying to make the boys metagame, but I think Griz mentioned Kinta is a fiend which means Gil can hit him like a truck. Gotta assume nothing can be done inside the shop, so Kinta chases Chip outside. Gil sentinel's Kinta right outside the door to drop Kinta's movement to zero, Chip does a second sneak attack, disengages and backs off while Jay drops her turret for passive damage and Gil uses waterwall/ice ground to make it hard for Kinta to retreat back in the shop. It's assumed Ollie is back with Jay, so If Kinta can do extreme jumps and goes for her, Gil can drop his movement to Zero while Ollie yeets Jay on a roof and either dips out to tell the crew to come as backup, or rips the door off a house and throws it at Kinta. If Kinta goes after Chip, Gil drops his movement. If Gil misses, Chip can drop ball bearings. Ideally Kinta falls to the ground and Chip can choose between ranged spells and risking melee on ball bearings. I love Gil and hate this but outside of insane luck I'm assuming he'll get hit by Kinta. Fuck it I'm gonna make a 3rd comment after I go over Gil's stuff because he resonates with me and I don't want to do him an injustice

Okay last comment dedicated to Gil. Like I said, divine smite will hit a fiend like a truck, but Protection from Evil and Good will give a fiend disadvantage against Gil getting hit and that makes Shield of Faith's +2AC look REALLY good. Now, Gil has many options for close or far range acting as a sentinel/battlefield control: If Gil makes Kinta stop chasing Chip with his sentinel feat it'll be on Kinta's turn, which means Gil can Glacial blade on his own turn allowing Chip and possibly Gil to safely get away while Jay sets up flame turret. Wouldn't recommend smiting this early unless ball bearings are dropped, but in that case using Thunderous smite to try pushing Kinta into bearings would be smart. Gil carries oil, which means if Kinta gets out of Jay's turret cone Gil could drop oil and Chip can ignite it, and with an ice wall blocking Kinta's retreat, Gil might not have to stay in close range. Gil also has ball bearings as well, and using compell duel with them could be useful if he wants to range tank because he can also run back, misty step to create total distance of 55 feet away from Kinta and the turret's flames, then use vortex warp to drop Kinta back into the fire after Kinta spends a turn moving, allowing for an extra turn of damage, while using divine favor and chucking javelins. That gives Gil an extra turn to set up shield while at far range, but if Gil can't stop Kinta's approach, then Jay or Chip can use a weak attack or spell to trigger Gil's Shield and give him +5AC. That's one round of up to 8+2+5AC with disadvantage for Kinta to hit. I didn't look at all the spell slot counts but personally I'd save a slot for Branding smite in case shit gets bad enough that Chip or Jay need help getting advantage on attacks. If Kinta has backup, Gil can twin spell Bubble and Hold person to keep the heat off Ollie and Jay, but because they're both concentration and can be resisted or broken after each turn I wouldn't use it against Kinta. That said sanctuarying Ollie might be a solid move if Gil can't hold person/bubble them all and needs breathing room to deal with Kinta. Lastly, at DM discretion, chalk can possibly be ground up into dust and used like pocket sand for potential disadvantage to an enemy.

THISSSS I enjoyed the talk over this so much especially because I'm someone who doesn't play dnd and learning like this makes me understand the normal story alot better in combat and i just like high numbers hehehhehee

Jam'ez

Artificers can switch out one of their cantrips however its only when they level up, not when they take a long rest

R.

Condi! All-purpose-tool! Get it! Get to cast any cantrip as an artificer cantrip! Doo itt!

GoblyDoo

I agree, Chip could

RuthTheBananaDuck

I love the rules talk. Charlie’s passion for it makes it really enjoyable to listen to, even if I don’t fully understand it

Jam'ez

I have a dnd friend who does exactly this, basically plans out the entire combat like 4 days before the actual session lmao.

Bruh lol. I've only been that guy a time or 2 but I'm actually kinda terrified of Kinta for the gang lol, honestly if Griz hadn't said to give advice I wouldn't have considered it lol. I guess it means this is a great podcast when people get that invested in the characters ^_^;

Jam'ez

No worries I completely get you. Im also super worried for them too especially after seeing the Rakshasa stat block jesus christ that thing is fucking scary

SorcererPunk

The flashback magic item reminds me of the an alternate rule allowing Inspiration to be used as a flashback as well as the Phantom Thief rogue subclass from The Ultimate Adventurers Handbook which allows you to use a reaction to flashback and take a turn in the past.

Chip could pet the kitty

1) as a dnd fan and a dm, I Love rule talk esp how the players can peak and just absolutely waste an enemy.. also about koopa kenta(?) I think it is very fun and real about hp not being the thing that makes him dangerous. There are builds that I have with low ACs but have decent hp and a hell ton of damage possibilities!! And if you're a range caster, you can be so dangerous. 2) I just realized this while listening to the recap, but how was Jay able to read? Did she regain her ability to read at some point?

lostincarcosa

Guys it’s a dnd podcast I love hearing the rules. Honestly it helps me out when I play. Otherwise a lot of things sound to logistically hard to pull off. Also love hearing the thought process behind moves and attack flavors.

Jake Veltkamp

This does not have anything to do with this episode, but the first one in fact. Just bought my first ship in Sea of Thieves and named it The Big Chipper. Gotta rep the best pirate crew ever

AislinnMollisong

They said that it came back when they left the Feywild, the explanation got a bit lost in all the immediate chaos
